OISD, NISD above Region 9 STAAR averages

The Texas Education Agency released their annual Texas Academic Performance Report earlier this month providing an insight to Newcastle and Olney ISD’s State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) performance, graduation rates and teacher salaries.

The STAAR has four levels of performance which are measured highest to lowest by Masters Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, Approaches Grade Level and Did Not Meet Grade Level, which is the only level that is not passing.

Newcastle and Olney ISD are a part of Region 9 which contains the counties of Hardeman, Foard, Knox, Wilbarger, Baylor, Throckmorton, Wichita, Archer, Young, Clay, Jack and Montague.

Newcastle ISD dropped 1% from last year in the at Approaches Grade Level or Above for all grades, all subjects to 82%, which is 7% higher than the Region 9 average. The at Masters Grade Level dropped 2% from last year to 19% which is 2% higher than the Region 9 average.

NISD saw an 8% increase in at Masters Grade Level writing across the district along with a 1% increase in reading and mathematics. The district saw a 14% decrease in the at Master Level in science and a 8% decrease in social studies.

Newcastle was above Region 9 averages for at Masters Grade Level in mathematics, writing and social studies.

The STAAR performance percentages for NISD compared to Region 9 are 7% higher in the at Approaches Grade Level or above at 82%, 9% higher in at Meets Grade Level or above at 53% and the same at Masters Grade Level at 19%.

Olney ISD saw increases in all grades, all subject at all levels from last year except in writing which saw a 14% decrease at the at Meets Grade Level or Above to 48% which is 16% above the Region 9 average. The district also saw a 3% decrease in at Masters Grade Level to 20% which is 10% above the Region 9 average.

OISD was above Region 9 averages for at Masters Grade Level in all subjects.

The STAAR performance percentages for OISD compared to Region 9 are 11% higher in the at Approaches Grade Level or above at 86%, 18% higher in at Meets Grade Level or above at 62% and 8% higher at Masters Grade Level at 27%.

Graduation rates

Included in the report is graduation data for Newcastle High School, which in the 2017-18 year had a 100% graduation rate with 15 graduates. Of the graduates, one was a special education graduate, eight were economically disadvantaged graduates and five were at-risk graduates.

The average SAT score for the class of 2018 were higher than the average for schools across Region 9. The average SAT score for NISD graduates was 1203 as opposed to the 1063 for Region 9. The ELA and writing portion score for NISD was 578 while the Region 9 average was 537. The average mathematics score was a 625 versus a 526 for Region 9.
During the 2017-2018 school year, Olney High School had a 100% graduation rate with 42 graduates. Of the graduates, seven were special education graduates, 18 were economically disadvantaged graduates and six were at-risk graduates.

The average ACT score for the OISD class of 2018 were lower than the average for schools across Region 9. The average ACT score for OISD graduates was an 18.2 as opposed to the 20.9 for Region 9. The ELA and writing portion score for OISD was 17.7 while the Region 9 average was 20.7. The average mathematics score was a 18.2 versus a 20.4 for Region 9. The average science score was 18.5 compared to a 21.3 average for Region 9.
