Primary runoff election day Tuesday

Early voting ended Friday in the runoff election for the March primaries and election day is approaching next week across the state and in Young County.

Election day voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 28. Polling locations will be Loving Volunteer Fire Department at 8891 Hwy. 114 East in Loving, First Baptist Church Newcastle at 501 Graham St. in Newcastle, First United Methodist Church at 700 Third St. in Graham, North Central Texas College at 928 Cherry St. in Graham and Olney Community Library and Arts Center at 807 W. Hamilton St. in Olney.

Early voting was held from May 20-24 at two county locations. A total of 454 voters turned out as of Thursday afternoon, or 3.7% of total registered county voters.

Young County Commissioner Precinct 3 candidates Scott (Scooter) Philipp and Alan Craig are on the Republican ballot for the runoff election following the release of the county’s results of the Tuesday, March 5 primary election.

Candidates for Young County Precinct 3 Commissioner were Philipp, Craig and Dickie “Coach” Scott. During the election Philipp received 383 votes (42.75%), Craig received 357 votes (39.84%) and Scott received 156 votes (17.41%).

Along with the Precinct 3 race on the Republican ballot are candidates Brent Hagenbuch and Jace Yarbrough vying for State Senator for District 30. Overall in the March primary election Hagenbuch received 35,262 votes (36.38%) and Yarbrough received 32,899 votes (33.94%) and beat opponents Carrie De Moor and Cody Clark.

The Democratic ballot will also have runoff candidates Dale Frey and Michael Braxton for State Senator for District 30. Overall in the March primary election Braxton received 7,833 votes (37.72%) and Frey received 6,856 (33.02%) to beat out opponent Matthew McGhee.

Per state law, those who vote with one political party in the primary election must vote in the same political party for the runoff election. Following the runoff election, the winners in each party’s primary elections will be the party’s nominee in the general election Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Early voting in the November election will be Monday, Oct. 21, through Friday, Nov. 1.

The last day to register to vote in the November election is Monday, Oct. 7. The last day to receive a ballot by mail will be Tuesday, Nov. 5.
