Since 2006, The Run for the Children race has provided over $160,000 for Virginia’s House in Graham and later for Dr. Goodall’s House in Breckenridge. Despite not being held for the last two years due to extenuating circumstances, the run has been able to provide over $30,000 in funding through donations and support from the community.

Dr. Dora Cawley, who serves as a pediatrician, started the program in 2006 after looking for a way to help in area that impressed her beyond her area of study, in the field of supporting victims of child abuse and neglect.

“As a pediatrician, the biggest thing I remember as I was getting ready to take that track was helping children who did not have that feeling of security and love and warmth in their heart,” Cawley said.

The race from its inception has been a 10K, 5K and 1K run which has benefited both Virginia’s House and Dr. Goodall’s House which meet the needs of abused, neglected and traumatized children through prevention, advocacy and support programs. The last two years have been a rough road for the program with weather canceling the 2019 event and COVID-19 forcing the organizers to move to a virtual run in 2020.
