Sales tax rebates start year well for city, county

The city’s first 2018 sales tax rebate shows a modest increase when compared to that in the same month last year. Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced Thursday he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $709.2 million in local sales tax allocations for January, 9.5 percent more than in January 2017. These allocations are based on sales made in November by businesses that report tax monthly. It should be noted that sales taxes do not make up the bulk of a city’s or county’s revenues.
