Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called an emergency special election Sunday, Aug. 23, after Texas 30th District State Senator Pat Fallon resigned the same day and opened a vacancy for the position. Candidates had a deadline to file to be on the special election ballot with the Texas Secretary of State last Friday for the position which covers a 14-county area, including Young County.

The Tuesday, Sept. 29 special election will serve as the second election in Young County after COVID-19 restrictions were implemented and slowly loosened locally and statewide following the primary runoff election which concluded in July.

The uncertified six candidates who filed for the unexpired term were Craig Carter (R), Andy Hopper (R), Shelley Luther (R), Jacob Minter (D), Drew Springer (R) and Christopher Watts (R). There will be one item on the ballot for the election which is the District 30 seat. The final listing of candidates on the ballot will not be official until the election withdrawal deadline on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
