Smokin’ Steers take third at Graham competition

The smell of barbecue filled the air Saturday, Nov. 19 as 13 teams from 10 schools across Texas gathered on the downtown square to compete for scholarship money and a spot in the Texas HS BBQ Inc. state competition in Round Rock in May 2023.

For the first time Graham High School had two teams competing in the third annual Graham Regional competition with the freshman team, known as the Graham Pitmasters.

With a third-place overall finish, the Smokin’ Steers, consisting of captain Landan Locker, Lucio Arvizu, Jesus Lucio and Bryan Sanchez earned a spot in the state competition and $1,500 each in scholarship money. The team took third overall in dessert, first in beans, tenth in chicken, sixth in ribs and sixth in brisket.

The Graham Pitmasters is made up of team captain Matthew Monrreal, Grady DePriest, Case Etling and Nick Wankowicz. Following the results where the team just missed out on a state-qualifying bid with an 11th-place overall finish, they received word that they qualified as a top-10 finisher and earned a spot in the state competition. The Pitmasters team took seventh in dessert, seventh in beans, eighth in chicken, ninth in ribs and finished outside of the top 10 in brisket.
