Stopping crime one sniff at a time
Scott Lawrence has been a police officer in Chicago for 25 years and now his son Austin, the Graham Police Department K-9 Supervisor is following in his footsteps. Lawrence has been with GPD for about four years and has been a K-9 handler for three.
“The K-9 handler position came up in the department and I at first was kind of hesitant about it because, I never really had big dogs in my life,” Lawrence said. “I talked it over with my wife and family and decided to give it a shot so I tried out for it. (…) I got it and they sent me down to Louisiana for four to six weeks and got certified to be a handler.”
Lawrence K-9 officer Marko, a seven year GPD veteran, until he passed away July 19, 2017 after medical issues, K-9 Officer Vader joined the force in October of 2017 to replace Marko and Lawrence has been working with him since.
