The Library of Graham Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading Program will kick off at the beginning of June promoting summer reading for Young County children. The library hosts shows alongside the reading program which accepts reading logs from kindergarten through fifth grade students.

Last year, the library’s Summer Reading Program had 107 children read over a total of 1,344 hours. The library will be kicking off its summer reading challenge this year at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 1 at Crestview Elementary School with the Wildlife on the Move animal show. Library of Graham Director Kelly LaFarge said the program is held annually by the library to encourage a love of reading at an early age.

“The point of hosting a summer reading challenge is to support the young people in the county, support the schools and encourage kids to develop the habit of reading,” she said. “The nice thing with the summer program is the kids can choose their own books, whatever they want to read. So it’s self-choice, which is a good motivator. And we’re trying to encourage them to come in the library so they’ve got still a little bit of routine and activity going on even though school is out.”

The reading challenge will take place Wednesday, June 1 through Friday, July 15. To participate in the program participating children must read 30 minutes a day and record their time on a reading log. Logs must be brought into the library each week for coupons and each participant must have a total of 1.5 hours of total read time in that week.
