Severe weather brought chaos to Graham and Young County as four fires hit the area and street light outages hit Graham Tuesday, Aug. 13.

A thunderstorm rolled into Graham around 4 p.m. and dropped 0.22 inches of rain and had multiple close lightning strikes.

The first weather related call came in at 4:13 p.m., notifying emergency service personnel of a grass fire threatening a house with people inside at 1806 White Rose Road. While on scene, a Young County Sheriff’s Office Deputy told The Graham Leader, those inside the house were able to evacuate through a back pasture.

The sheriff’s office and multiple trucks from county volunteer fire departments responded to the scene and were able to get the fire under control before it reached the house. The scene was cleared at 6:24 p.m.

A lightning strike near the downtown square in Graham resulted in street light outages at the intersections of Third and Elm St. and Fourth and Elm St. at 4:44 p.m. It was reported over the dispatch that it was going to take Texas Department of Transportation over an hour to be on scene. Officers from the Graham Police Department performed traffic control at the intersections.
