With severe storms imminent, Remembering Wyatt Dale Water Safety Awareness made the decision on Thursday, May 16, to postpone their sixth annual Family Fun in the Sun event which was to be held Saturday, May 18.

“We had been watching the weather and watching the weather and finally we met with the fire department and the sheriff’s department just to kind of get input on both sides,” Remembering Wyatt Dale co-founder Tracey Terasas said. “It looked like there was a potential for bad storms and we do not want to put families or kids in harm’s way at all.”

The event will now be held at a new location, Lake Eddleman, on Aug. 24. Families will still be able to exchange their old children’s life jackets for new ones if they weigh under 100 lbs. at the Graham Fire Department from June 3 to 14.

Terasas encourages for parents to return the lifejackets once their children have outgrown them, so they can be put into the lifejacket loaner station out at Lake Eddleman.

“So, we put our lifejackets out there, and they are expensive, and it was concerning to other people that maybe they would walk off,” she said in a previous interview. “To me it’s concerning that we wouldn’t have (lifejackets) there. People have used them and they put them back.”

Run for the Children

The 14th annual Run for the Children event benefiting Virginia’s House in Graham and their satellite office, Dr. Goodall’s House, in Breckenridge was canceled on Saturday due to storms.

The race was delayed due to stormy weather and was going to be reevaluated at 9 a.m. At 8:28 a.m., Virginia’s House posted a message on their Facebook page thanking those who supported the run and announced the cancellation of the event.
