A wildfire named The Pennington Creek wildfire has destroyed more than 2,600 acres of Palo Pinto and Jack County land.

Multiple agencies were called to the fire which started along Pennington Creek near the border of Jack and Palo Pinto counties at 4:13 p.m. Monday. The fire was also fought using aviation resources including Air Attack, a Type 1 Helicopter, and three single-engine air tankers.

Jack County Emergency Management Coordinator Frank Hefner said the fire began Monday afternoon near Graford but with the dry air and hot temperatures, moved quickly north into Jack County.

“We also had a lot of rain last spring and the fall before,” Hefner said. “It may look green around here but we have a lot of dead, dry underbrush around here.”

Hefner said the fire burned south of Rock Creek Road and west of Halsa Ranch Road east of FM 1191. No injuries were reported but one barn and its contents were destroyed.
