One of the ways that Young County is tracking the spread of COVID-19 is through antibody testing, and the results that have come back are surprising.

Young County Local Health Authority, Dr. Pat Martin explained that the county has been performing IgG antibody tests for a while now and with more than 300 tests administered, as of Monday, June 15, he is somewhat surprised by the results.

“We have done over 300 antibody tests and only nine of those came back IgG positive,” Martin said. “Only nine of those came back surprisingly positive. All the ones that were nasal swab positive were also antibody tested positive of the ones we tested. So only nine people had the antibody test that didn’t already have a diagnosis.”

Across the state of Texas more than 149,000 antibody tests have been administered. These tests are completely separate from the nasal swabs and test your immunity to, or antibodies against, COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control has interim guidelines for antibody testing, including how tests can be administered and how soon antibodies appear.
