Young County Masons hosting auction to benefit area students next month

After making the decision in February to postpone the Young County Masonic Lodge #485 annual Scholarship Auction to next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has again decided to host the event this year in April.

The lodge made the decision to postpone the event originally Thursday, Feb. 4, only two days after deciding to downsize the event to only the gun auction and move the event to the Young County Arena. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott lifted the mask mandate in the state last Tuesday and announced businesses could open to 100% of their operating capacity, which Lodge District Education Officer and Past Grand Master Mike Sipes said affected the decision.

“When the governor decided to allow crowds again we decided the other night to try to have it,” Sipes said. “The problem was that COVID hit our lodge pretty hard with a couple of people that had gotten sick. We have even lost one of the principals of the gun auction.”
