Young County sees higher primary election early voting turnout

Young County exceeded their early voting totals from the 2016 primary election during the last day of early voting in the March 3 primary election.

Young County Elections Administrator, Lauren Sullivan, posted an update Friday on her official elections Facebook page stating 1,878 voters turned out in total for early voting, or 16% of the 11,631 registered voters within the county. During the 2016 election, a total of 1,705 ballots were cast during early voting (14.7% turnout with 11,541 registered voters) and a total of 4,273 ballots were cast during election day (37% turnout with 11,541 registered voters), according to the 2016 county canvass report.

Local offices up for election with contested races include sheriff, county tax assessor-collector and county commissioner, pct. 1 and 3. Candidates who have filed for the office of sheriff are Travis Babcock (incumbent), Tim Bay and Charlie Parker. Candidates who have filed for county tax assessor-collector are Stephanie Crail and Christy Centers. Nancy Thomas, who has served five terms as the tax-assessor collector, announced in late 2019 that she would not be seeking reelection in the March 3 primary election. Candidates who have filed for the office of county commissioner, pct. 1 are Stacy Creswell and Mike Sipes. Candidates who have filed for the office of county commissioner, pct. 3 are Stacey K. Rogers and Scott (Scooter) Phillips.
