The east side of the Young County Courthouse will be named after the designation was unanimously passed by county commissioners Monday.

In the Young County commissioners court meeting on Jan. 13, they approved the naming the east side of the courthouse as ‘Young County Veterans Memorial Plaza.’

“We need to get an official name for it, so when people talk about it they can say plaza rather than the side of the courthouse, where the dog is at or those kinds of things,” said Precinct 1 Commissioner Mike Sipes. “People can still call it what they want, but it will have an official designation.”

Young County Judge John Bullock said that the only thing this would change is possibly putting a sign up for the plaza.

The original Memorial was dedicated on Nov. 11, 2000, while the New Century Veterans Memorial was dedicated on July 4, 2018.

A resolution will be discussed and signed at the next commissioners court meeting on Jan. 27, finalizing the naming of the location.
