Two candidates headed to runoff election for House District 68 seat

Candidates David Spiller and Craig Carter are headed to a runoff election for the Texas House of Representatives District 68 seat vacated by Drew Springer, who won the Texas Senate District 30 position in December 2020.

The HD68 election was called by Gov. Greg Abbott Saturday, Dec. 23, for Saturday, Jan. 23, in the 22 counties within the district. HD68 covers the counties of Childress, Collingsworth, Cooke, Cottle, Crosby, Dickens, Fisher, Floyd, Garza, Hall, Hardeman, Haskell, Jack, Kent, King, Montague, Motley, Stonewall, Throckmorton, Wheeler, Wilbarger and Young.

Filing deadline approaching for local area May elections

Local entities in Young County will be hosting elections for official positions expiring in May during the uniform election date. The deadline to file to run in these elections is approaching at the beginning of February.

The city of Graham, Graham ISD, city of Olney, Olney ISD, Olney Hamilton Hospital, Newcastle ISD, city of Newcastle and Baylor County Water District are all having elected positions expiring May 1, 2021. The first day to file to be on the ballot was Wednesday, Jan. 13 for local political subdivisions.

You Lead Standpipe project begins with trail clearing, restoration

Saturday kicked off the first work being done local organizations on Standpipe Mountain. The group worked on clearing trails of overhanging branches and overgrown trees to start off the first day of their restoration process.

The Graham City Council approved a request by the You Lead Class of 2021 to start improvements at Standpipe Mountain in December 2020, starting with inquiring about the condition of the water tower and obtaining funds to make those improvements.

YCSO involved in Graham shooting incident

A traffic stop turned into a sheriff’s office shooting incident last month in the 1200 block of 4th St. in Graham. The incident took place Dec. 28, around 9:45 p.m.

A release from the Young County Sheriff’s Office states Jimmy Ray Earl Merrifield, 45, of Gainesville, refused an order to step out of a vehicle, identified as a 2009 silver Chevrolet Silverado by the Graham Police Department. The release states Merrifield drove off, nearly striking the deputy in the process.

City council approves creek bank clearing project

The Graham City Council last Thursday approved the use of $10,000 from the Special Park Fund to clear the banks of Salt Creek along the proposed trail area for the planned Salt Creek Park project. Graham Parks and Recreation Board President Lee Boyd said during the meeting he got a quote from the company Pierce Land Clearing, of Blum, to proceed with the project this week.
