Grass fires break out in county

Firefighters around Young County battled several grass fires across the county Thursday through Sunday, as warmer temperatures and winds came through the area.

A total of seven fires started over the four-day period. Two grass fires broke out on opposite sides of Young County on May 7, the first being dispatched at 2:43 p.m. near Lowe Road in Newcastle and the second at 2:58 p.m. on FM 3109 near South Bend, which started after a powerline fell.

TPWD park grant award meeting delayed to August

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department pushed their award meeting to August for grants released through their local parks grant program, according to a representative from Jacob Martin, LLC, which was the engineering company authorized by the city of Graham to apply for TPWD grants.

The city is attempting to obtain TPWD matching grants which will allow them to make improvements to the local parks. The city received $1.3 million from the Brazos River Authority for park improvement projects in June 2018.

Humane Society of Young County wades through COVID-19

When COVID-19 hit Texas in March, the Humane Society of Young County had to plan for a period of time that they could not be open or be able to accept animals which were surrendered or stray. Now that things are beginning to open up, HSYC is still taking precautions to ensure the safety of the staff and community.

HSYC announced through Facebook on March 24 that they would be closed to the public out of abundance of safety for their staff, but they would still be there to care and provide enrichment to the animals that were in the shelter.

City enacts Stage 5 water conservation order to repair leak

UPDATE: City Manager Brandon Anderson sent an updated release stating the emergency order will be Stage 5 and not Stage 4. The story has been updated to reflect this change.

The city of Graham released a press release Tuesday afternoon stating they will perform another repair to their main 24-inch water line into the city Wednesday, May 13.

GRT takes brief intermission

The Graham Regional Theatre made the decision to postpone all productions, camps, and activities through the end of June, out of safety as the country battles COVID-19.

Graham Regional Theatre had a full summer schedule in place before COVID-19 began to impact the country. Christian Sanders, Managing Director for GRT, along with the board made the tough decision to postpone the remainder of the 2019-2020 season. With this all remaining shows and programs will be pushed back one year.

Graham Farmers Market set to open May 16

The farmers market is back with the hopes to soon become the place to be on Saturdays throughout the summer, with fresh fruits and vegetables and vendors selling baked and handmade goods.

Graham Farmers Market will begin their third season on May 16 at the Old Ag Barn on Hwy. 67. The open-air market will have a wide variety of vendors for the community to shop local and enjoy.

Run for the Children moves to weekend virtual run

To help practice and maintain social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the 15th Annual Run for the Children has gone virtual. Participants will be able to run or walk anywhere, even on a treadmill, during the weekend of May 16.

“It is imperative that those participating comply with CDC guidelines to maintain social, or, physical, distancing during this time,” said run organizer Dori Cawley.
