One week left to file for area May elections

Candidates looking to file for a place on the ballot have until next Friday for the May 2 uniform election, which involves local political subdivisions.

The first day to file was Jan. 15 and filing for the election will end Friday, Feb. 14.

New to this election is the passing of HB 305 in the 86th Legislative Session, which requires political subdivisions with authority to impose a tax to post information regarding the candidates and election online on their website.

Winter weather hits Young County

A winter storm passed through North Texas, including Young County, Tuesday, Feb. 4 through Thursday, Feb. 6, closing much of Graham and area school districts.

According to the National Weather Service-Dallas/Fort Worth, Young County saw 3.75 of snowfall. The snow fall was coupled with below-freezing temperatures, which had been prepped for by TxDOT and local agencies.

Newcastle FFA member wins awards at Fort Worth Stock Show

After placing in the Young County Junior Livestock Show in January, Newcastle FFA member Victoria Richards picked up two wins at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Feb. 1-2.

Richards won the Reserve Champion Poland China Gilt and the Champion Chester White Gilt in the Open Swine Show during the 2020 Fort Worth Stock & Rodeo at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.

Chamber hosting Sweetheart Dance next week

The Graham Chamber of Commerce is hosting a community-wide event to help build the bond between a father and daughter, or daughter and father figure. The Sweetheart Dance is being held Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Graham Activity Center.

The event is welcoming children aged 4-12 and their fathers or father figures. The event will cost $30 per pair with each additional child costing $10. Graham Chamber of Commerce CEO Krisa De La Cruz said the idea for the event came years ago from several chamber members.

Art of Bertha Street on display through March

The Old Post Office Museum and Art Center is displaying the works of Anna Bertha Street through the end of March. The 33 pieces of art represent a lifetime of the woman whose children continue to make an impact within Graham.

According to information provided to the OPOMAC by Dorman Holub and Anne Street, Anna Bertha Street was born in Graham Dec. 4, 1884, and at 7 years old moved to Spokane, Wash. with her parents

GRT opens new melodrama, continues season of performances

A melodrama, a style of theater that dates back to the 18th century, is being performed at Graham Regional Theater in the form of “LaRue’s Return… or How’s a Bayou?”

“It is a classic melodrama,” said Christian Sanders, Managing Director. “This means it is broadly played. It is silly, fun. It is in the style that they did in the late 19th, early 20th century.”

The play began on Friday, Jan. 31 and will run until Feb. 9. The performance will be Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Chamber honors citizens, businesses at banquet

The Graham Chamber of Commerce welcomed businesses and other individuals Tuesday to the Young County Arena as they recognized those that go above and beyond in the community to make a difference. The annual Chamber Banquet and Taste of Graham events kicked off at the arena with community and business recognitions.

Introductions were made to both events by Graham Chamber of Commerce CEO, Krisa De La Cruz. De La Cruz said the Taste of Graham event had one major change this year from years prior.

Rotary Club clears student lunch debt at GISD

The Rotary Club of Graham donated $1,390 Tuesday to support students in Graham ISD who had standing lunch debt within the district.

Jodie Arispe, Food Service Director for GISD, spoke at the meeting and said this donation will make a difference within the district.

“It will today impact 137 students,” Arispe said. “Prior to this, just out of the blue, I had two families come forward and both gave $500 checks to pay lunch charges. So, I don’t have as many as we did just two weeks ago, but with four months still of school they will be back up there I am sure.”

Masonic Lodge prepares for scholarship auction

The 13th Annual Young County Masonic Lodge Scholarship Auction is right around the corner and members of the Masonic Lodge are looking for lists of consignment auction items.

Young County Masonic Lodge #485 is holding their annual auction on Saturday, March 14 at the Old Ag Barn at Fireman’s Park. According to Weldon Floyd of the Masonic Lodge, people that put their items up for consignment will receive 90% of the proceeds with 10% going to fund local scholarships.
