Graham city manager updates council on TPWD grant

The Graham City Council was updated on the status of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Grant submitted by the city in December at last Thursday’s council meeting. The city is attempting to obtain TPWD matching grants to allow for more improvements to the local parks.

The city of Graham received $1.3 million from the Brazos River Authority for parks improvement projects in June 2018. The money was received for the Salt Creek Park project to turn the floodplain along Salt Creek into a park for the city with a waiver of liability to the BRA.

GRMC laboratory services partnering with CSU

Graham Regional Medical Center has something it claims rural hospitals do not have, a laboratory that is at the same level as that of larger health care centers. Now the hospital is partnering with Charleston State University to bring students into the lab to complete their clinical.

Teri Robertson, Laboratory Director at GRMC gave the board an update on what is going on in the lab at the hospital district board meeting on Jan. 21.

GRMC approves three new defibrillators for EMS ambulances

Graham and Young County EMS is getting an upgrade to their  10-year-old defibrillators in their vehicles. The Graham Hospital District Board approved the purchase of three new defibrillators to be used by EMS.

“Each one of our ambulances has a LIFEPAK defibrillator in it,” said Shane Kernell, Graham Regional Medical Center CEO. “A defibrillator is a shocking device, essentially, that someone in a life-threatening heart rhythm can be shocked into a normal rhythm.”

Plea date set for former acting Olney chief

The city of Olney’s former Acting Police Chief appeared in Young County District 90 Court for a plea negotiation on the six charges against him.

Robert Michael Cross was in court Wednesday, Jan. 22 for his plea negotiation docket. Cross is charged with three counts of oppression, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of sexual assault.

He appeared with his defense attorney, Tim Ford, where a plea date was set for March 4.

Cross faces up to 10 years in Federal Prison for this charge and will be sentenced on March 9.

Graham DECA students advance to state competition

There will be 13 Graham High School DECA students heading to Fort Worth for the DECA State contest in late February.

DECA is an international student organization that focuses on roleplay, interviews and exams in the area of marketing, hospitality, finance and management.

With 13 of 16 students making it past regionals, Cooper Gordy said there is more than just a test and roleplay.

State of the shelter: Young County Humane Society sees stability

Things have not always gone so smoothly for the Humane Society of Young County, but the start of 2020 has things looking more stable for the local animal shelter.

It has been a rough road for the Humane Society over the past few years, with rumors of shutting down to struggles with the board of directors, 2020 brings some optimism for the area shelter.
