NCVM brick deadline extended to end of January

The New Century Veterans Memorial has extended the deadline until the end of January for the purchase of engraved bricks, as a part of their sidewalk replacement campaign.

The organization extended the deadline until Friday, Jan. 31, due to problems with the number published in promotional materials for the campaign. Former NCVM Board Chair Reta McCallum announced the board was beginning phase two of the brick campaign during the Tuesday, Nov. 12 Young County Commissioners Court meeting.

GRMC completes sale of home health and hospice

The Graham Medical Center Board of Directors approved the sale of their home health and hospice department to Hospice Group of Texas No. 1, LLC, Thursday, Jan. 9.

The board agreed to an offer Monday, Nov. 11, for the purchase of its home health and hospice department, which it placed for sale Thursday, Sept. 5. In the November meeting, the board also voted to enter into the final negotiations regarding the department.

Filing opens next week for local elections

Next week, candidates can begin filing for a place on the ballot in the May 2 uniform election which involves local political subdivisions.

The first day to file is Wednesday, Jan. 15 and filing for the election runs through Friday, Feb. 14. New to this election is the passing of HB 305 in the 86th Legislative Session, which requires political subdivisions with authority to impose a tax to post information regarding the candidates and election online on their website.

Graham Memorial Auditorium installs new lighting system

Graham Memorial Auditorium is getting a facelift on its lighting system this week as new LED lights are being installed inside the facility, replacing lights that are over 25 years old.

Former Auditorium Manager, Jerry McDowell, said the idea to do a full replacement started when he presented the idea to get rid of the 288 colored bulbs in the auditorium in order to save on electricity costs. He said when the lighting company came out to demonstrate a new lighting system, City Manager Brandon Anderson suggested to change all of the lights.

Cancer support group, Wigs of Love gives back to the community

When Laurie Behr and Donna Pearce met each other it was not under the best circumstances, but over the past 15 years they have been able to help and support others who are going through cancer.

The Cancer Support Group of Graham began in the winter 15 years ago when Pearce was an urgent referral to Dr. Donald Behr after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.

“My husband (Dr. Behr) — he was alarmed. She was a younger woman, she had a child at home,” said Behr.

GISD gives GHS greenhouse project update

Graham ISD Superintendent Sonny Cruse gave an update during the December school board meeting about the Graham High School greenhouse project is nearing completion.

The board approved a vendor for the construction of a greenhouse at GHS in May 2019 and the district set aside $60,000 originally when developing the 2018-2019 budget for the project. The board accepted a proposal from S&M Consulting of $40,000, which Cruse said in the May 2019 meeting would cover the cost of the greenhouse.

GPEF announces $3 million endowment fund goal

The Graham Public Education Foundation officially launched its endowment campaign in December with the goal of creating a $3 million endowed fund.

In a video by Graham ISD Superintendent Sonny Cruse, he highlighted what G.P.E.F. is and what it does for the Graham school system.

“It is such a positive partnership between the school district and G.P.E.F.,” Cruse said in the video. “G.P.E.F. provides additional funding for our teachers in the form of innovative grants.”
