‘Wrapped in Love’ fundraiser ongoing

With hopes of providing warmth for at least 300 area elderly, Beyond Faith Hospice is hosting a new blanket drive through Saturday, Nov. 16.

Beyond Faith owner, Becky Richardson, said the drive, which began on Nov. 1, is in its second year and is partnered with Meals on Wheels.

Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization which delivers hot food to millions of elderly across America who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals.

GPD receives K-9 body armor

Graham Police Department received a donation of K-9 body armor on Nov. 1 from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. GPD first announced they would be receiving the donation on July 31.

According to a GPD Facebook post, K-9 Wolf will be receiving the bullet and stab protective vest which was sponsored by Stacy Wheetley, of Austin. The body vest will be embroidered with the sentence ‘This gift of protection provided by Stacy and Braxton.’

All American Girl Pageant Thursday, Saturday

The 48th annual All American Girl Pageant will be held at Graham Memorial Auditorium Thursday Nov. 7, and Saturday, Nov. 9, allowing students to show off their talents to the community.

Graham High School theater teacher and pageant coordinator Katie Huitt said 28 students, from freshmen to seniors, will be taking the stage at 7 p.m. Thursday to showcase their talents. The students will return at 7 p.m. Saturday with the finalists performing again and the judges announcing the winner, talent winner and runners up.

County rescinds burn ban

The Young County Commissioners Court voted to unanimously rescind the burn ban during their Nov. 4 called meeting. The ban had been in effect since it was placed in the Oct. 15 commissioners court meeting.

A resident, Andy Bowers, had requested a waiver so he could host a bonfire in honor of his brother-in-law in Padgett Saturday. According to the court, Bowers had plans to have the Olney Fire Department on scene and to make a $500 donation to their department for their help.

TxDOT to begin $20 million Hwy. 114 projects

The Texas Department of Transportation is starting on a highway widening projects for Hwy. 114 stretching from just west of FM 1769 in Young County to the Hwy. 281 junction in Jack County.

According to TxDOT Public Information Officers Adele Lewis and Michael Peters, the projects will be broken up into two pieces with an about 12 mile stretch in Young County being completed first.

Lewis said the project is very early on because work had not started as of Oct. 10. However, they should begin mobilizing equipment to break ground on the project soon.
