County rescinds burn ban

The Young County Commissioners Court voted to unanimously rescind the burn ban during their Nov. 4 called meeting. The ban had been in effect since it was placed in the Oct. 15 commissioners court meeting.

A resident, Andy Bowers, had requested a waiver so he could host a bonfire in honor of his brother-in-law in Padgett Saturday. According to the court, Bowers had plans to have the Olney Fire Department on scene and to make a $500 donation to their department for their help.

TxDOT to begin $20 million Hwy. 114 projects

The Texas Department of Transportation is starting on a highway widening projects for Hwy. 114 stretching from just west of FM 1769 in Young County to the Hwy. 281 junction in Jack County.

According to TxDOT Public Information Officers Adele Lewis and Michael Peters, the projects will be broken up into two pieces with an about 12 mile stretch in Young County being completed first.

Lewis said the project is very early on because work had not started as of Oct. 10. However, they should begin mobilizing equipment to break ground on the project soon.

Hunters for the Hungry helps those in need

With the general white-tailed deer hunting season starting today, so does an opportunity for hunters to help those in need.

The Dallas Safari Club, a conservation organization which is funded by hunters, will be hosting its 25th annual Hunters for the Hungry program. The program allows hunters to donate one or more of their legally tagged deer at a participating processor, who will then donate the meat to those in need.

A picture to the past

When Susie Cerecedez walked into the The Graham Leader office for an interview Tuesday, Oct. 22, regarding Graham Area United Way, she found something she did not expect, a connection to her past and a man who made a profound impact on her life.

On the wall of the office was a 1977 drawing by artist Jack Stevens. Since 1970, Stevens worked on paintings, sculptures and drawings at his home, according to his website. He passed away Friday, May 3, in Wichita Falls, and to Cerecedez, seeing the drawing opened her to her past with the man in the small town of Kamay.

GCA hosting Radney Foster Tuesday

Graham Concert Association is hosting Texas singer-songwriter and author Radney Foster at Memorial Auditorium next Tuesday.

Foster, who has written eight number one hit singles, said his interest in music came at a young age.

“It started when I was a little kid,” he said. “My mom has songs that I wrote in Sunday school from when I was 7-years-old, but I certainly didn’t, all growing up, I didn’t think it was going to be anything but a hobby.”

Things took a different turn for Foster when he was approached while playing with a band in college.

Voting totals low for first week of amendment election

As Young County heads into its second week of early voting, turnout has remained low county-wide.

Young County is hosting early voting for the Constitutional Amendment Election this week at two locations. A total of 25 voters had voted early in the election on the first day of early voting last week, according to Young County Elections Administrator Lauren Sullivan.

Farmers eligible for loans after USDA disaster declaration

Young County farmers and ranchers will be eligible to apply for low-interest loans after the United States Department of Agriculture said a natural disaster in 15 Texas counties on Oct. 4.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue declared drought conditions began on Sept. 10 for the counties. The 15 counties are Baylor, Bell, Callahan, Foard, Hardeman, Haskell, Jones, Knox, Milam, Nolan, Runnels, Shackleford, Taylor, Throckmorton and Williamson.
