LCS: Honoring a Possum Fest founder

During the 25th annual Possum Fest and Great Outdoors BBQ Cook-Off, a few moments were taken away from the festivities to recognize one of its founders, Frank Neve, who died on April 25.

“Frank Neve started Possum Fest 20 years ago, he was one of the founders of Possum Fest,” Chamber Executive Director Pam Wheat said. “He made this event what it is today. He is the one that started the live auction. Frank was really experienced in cook-offs and things like that. He thought that this is a good thing for fundraiser and for us to raise money for the community.”

LCS: Possum Fest celebrates 25 years with successful event

The 25th annual Possum Fest & Great Outdoors BBQ and Chili Cook-Off  raised plenty of money for the Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce this Friday and Saturday.

The event saw a total of 91 cook and 381 dish entries which up was from last year’s 89 cook and 339 dish entries. Awards were handed out for the top five in the Possum Nibble, margarita, brisket, chili, ribs, beans, pork butt, salsa, bloody mary and cobbler categories. Best showmanships awards were also handed out to a business and individual.

Motorcycle wreck sends one to ICU

A motorcycle wreck in the 2100 block of Hwy. 16 S. in Graham Sunday, Sept. 29, resulted in George Wilton Jr. being flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

According to a press release from the Graham Police Department, Sergeant Chris Post and Officer Daniel Huerta were dispatched to the scene of a major vehicle crash involving two motorcycles leaving one rider unconscious at 8:05 p.m.

GPEF receives matching grants

Graham Public Education Foundation announced, during their Hall of Honor ceremony last Friday, the creation of an endowment fund with matching grants provided by local benefactors up to $500,000.

GPEF was established as a nonprofit organization in October 2010 by an action of the Graham ISD board of trustees, according to information from GPEF. The organization operates independently from the district, but in cooperation.

GPD releases crime mapping system

The Graham Police Department and LexisNexis Risk Solutions partnered to provide a community crime map to keep the public informed about crime within the city.

GPD Chief of Police Brent Bullock and Sergeant Chris Denney spoke about the program during the city council meeting Thursday, explaining why the department decided on the partnership.

“We partnered with LexisNexis Risk Solutions trying to do something to keep the citizens more informed about the crime that is going on either in their neighborhoods, or Graham as a whole,” Bullock said.

Young County proclaims next week as 4-H week

The Young County Commissioner’s Court proclaimed Oct. 6-12 as 4-H week in the county during their meeting on Monday, Sept. 23.

According to a press release, The 4-H youth development program of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service seeks to provide a learning experience for the whole child. The 4-H program was founded on the belief of when children are allowed to chase their passions their skills grow and take shape which allows them to become true leaders in their lives, careers and communities.

LCS: Possum Fest set for Friday, Saturday

The 25th annual Possum Fest & Great Outdoors BBQ and Chili Cook-Off will be Friday and Saturday at the Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce.

For the first time, the event will feature a cornhole tournament. The tournament will consist of 64 two person teams with a double elimination format on Friday evening starting at 5 p.m. The finals will take place in a single elimination format starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. All entries will be $35 and must be at least 14-years-old with one adult member above 18-years-old on each team.
