County seeks Humane Society’s help with animal control problem

The Humane Society of Young County gave a report to the Young County Commissioners Court on Monday. The commissioners and Sheriff Travis Babcock also wondered if the shelter could help with county’s animal control problem.

Babcock said the problem Young County is running into is having a place to put animals and a way to transport them. Young County Judge John Bullock said the county has never had an animal control officer, so by default the sheriff department handles the calls.

Area wind farm sold, improvement project to begin

Ares Management acquired the Trinity Hills wind farm, in North Young County and Southern Archer County, and two other Texas wind farms from British Petroleum Wind Energy North America, Inc. on Dec. 21, 2018, according to a press release.

On Monday, the Young County Commissioners Court entered into a road use agreement with the wind farm company so they can begin working on upgrades.

GRMC receives $500,000 in donations to fund equipment purchases

Graham Regional Medical Center received $537,475 in donations from the Graham Benevolent Foundation and Bruce and Alice Anne Street which will allow for the purchases of a new ambulance, nurse call system and C-Arm machine.

The need for a new ambulance was a discussion point during the Aug. 20 hospital board meeting. Board member Suzy Graham approached her family members and the Graham Benevolent Fund agreed to pay for the purchase the ambulance which GRMC CEO Shane Kernell said had been an issue.

‘He’s a survivor’

Graham first responders descended upon 618 Lincoln St. Saturday, Aug. 10, as a structure fire raged. No people were injured in the fire, but running from the blaze was a stray kitten.

He was scooped up by Graham Fire Department Chief Jerry David and eventually handed off to Graham Emergency Medical Services personnel TJ Ward and Megan White.

County’s first tax hearing lacks attendance

No members of the public were in attendance for the first public hearing on Young County’s proposed tax rate at the county courthouse on Monday.

During the Aug. 12 Commissioner’s Court meeting, the commissioners voted to set the proposed tax rate at $0.772500 per $100 assessed. This is below the rollback rate of $0.772584, but higher than last year’s rate of $0.758613. The effective rate is currently set at $0.714957.

Graham Senior Citizen Center to change name, boost marketability

The Graham Senior Citizen Center soon will be undergoing a name change and over the weekend was cleaned, both of which are part of an effort to help market the center for dates and times it is not in use by seniors in the community.

The building at 825 Fairview St., provides meals for seniors Monday through Friday and is open for senior activities from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The operating expenses for the facility are provided by local donors, the city and through federal funding, according to the Graham Chamber of Commerce website.

Graham Backpack Buddies making a difference in students' lives

While some people call it a labor of love, there are those who simply see a need and respond.

Kerrie Ribble, coordinator of Graham Backpack Buddies, shared how her and the group of volunteers ranging from 15-20 people, are entering their 12th year meeting the physical and emotional needs of Head Start early learning students through high school students in Graham.

LCS: PKMBA presents checks to VFD and EMS

A little less than a month after their most successful Hell on Water Poker Run, the Possum Kingdom Muscle Boat Association presented $10,000 checks to the Possum Kingdom Eastside Volunteer Fire Department and the Possum Kingdom Westside Emergency Medical Services Department Saturday.

PKMBA president Sharla Carver said the Hell on Water event on Saturday, July 27, had triple the turnout which it did the first year and double what it had last year.
