RSB3 prepares for new season

With camps, leadership training and rehearsals in full swing, the Graham Rompin’ Stompin’ Big Blue Band is preparing for their debut in the first Steers game Aug. 30 at Hirschi.

Band Directors Josh Kidd and Dax Freeman said the upcoming show idea for the 2019-2020 school year came about during their trip to the annual music convention in San Antonio last year. Kidd said the directors pitch new ideas in September for the show for the following year and went through a number of ideas before choosing one for 2019-2020.

Building a future in Graham

Habitat for Humanity of Graham completed a milestone of 15 houses Sunday, after dedicating their latest home to the family of Kristy Garvin.

Starting in 2006, the Graham local affiliation of Habitat for Humanity has been building houses in Graham, with two constructed during their second year. The program searches for donated land and then designs and builds simple, affordable homes with donations from local individuals, businesses, churches and sponsoring organizations.

Library Summer Reading Program ends

The Library of Graham’s Summer Reading finale was at North Central Texas College on Wednesday, July 24, celebrating another successful summer of reading.

The program, which began on May 28, was for children who were incoming eighth graders and down through age 3. For every two hours read and logged, the child received six “book bucks” and a free book from the library. In total 6,966 book bucks were earned by the children.

Gear Up Graham providing school supplies Sunday

For a fifth year in a row, the Eastside Church of Christ will host their annual Gear Up Graham event helping children prepare for the upcoming school year from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4.

The church plans on giving out school supplies, haircuts, toiletries and undergarments, like socks and underwear, needed by children heading into kindergarten through fifth grade for the school year, which begins Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Constitutional Amendment Election, special elections to be held in November

Despite having no candidates on the ballot in the November election, Young County will still have a Constitutional Amendment election and be open for special called elections.

The last day for an entity to order a general election or an election on a measure is Monday, Aug. 19. There are 10 ballot measures which are certified for the ballot for the November election, according to Ballotpedia.

LCS: Third annual Poker Run to take place on Saturday

The Possum Kingdom Muscle Boat Association will be revving up their engines as they prepare for their third annual PKMBA Hell on Water Poker Run Saturday, July 27.

The Poker Run challenges boaters to make at least five of the eight stops to pick up dog tags and enjoy Possum Kingdom Lake before returning to Bonitaville restaurant by 7:30 p.m. At Bonitaville, they will turn in their dog tags for poker hands with the person having the best hand winning a cash prize.

GRMC hosting health fair Saturday

Since 1984, the annual Graham Community Health and Wellness Fair has helped those throughout the area who struggle to afford blood screenings by providing it free of charge to all those who register.

Graham Regional Medical Center will be hosting their annual health fair allowing citizens an opportunity to receive free health screenings and to visit 52 vendor booths from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Determined to beat childhood cancer

Cortney Trammell, wife, mother of two and high school counselor, found herself battling for the life of her son when he was just 10 days old. Now, Trammel battles for the lives of many other children who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Trammel was the guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club last Thursday, July 11. She shared her story, going back four years when her son, McCrae, was born and shortly after, diagnosed with stage-III pediatric neuroblastoma cancer.
