4th at the Fields to light up Graham’s skies Saturday

For a third year, the Graham Soccer Association and Graham VFW Memorial Post 8567 will light up the Graham soccer fields during the 4th at the Fields event this Saturday.

Gates will open for the event on the Graham soccer fields at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 29. The cost to attend will be $10 per car and proceeds will benefit GSA. GSA Director of Fundraising and Publicity, Guy Gage, said the event was created as a way to give back to the community.

Lions Club raises nearly $40,000 with annual carnival

The Graham Noon Lions Club raised around $40,000 for local causes with their 46th annual carnival, which was in town from May 8 through May 11.

“The proceeds from the carnival provides a majority of the funds we invest back into our community,” Noon Lions Club President Gary Elrod wrote in an email. “Because of the success of the carnival, the Graham Lion’s Club is one of the top service clubs, as well as a top investor/contributor into services and individuals in Graham, and the surrounding area.”

Beruta takes over as Director of Graham Economic Development

The city of Graham announced Joe Beruta as the new executive director of economic development at the beginning of June and Beruta has hit the ground running with his plans for the position.

Beruta, his wife, Alison, and daughters Bailey, 13, and Blair, 7, are moving from Allen and are not uncommon to Graham, making the trip to the area for the past few years.

4-H wins sheep and goat judging state title

Young County 4-H had one team walk away with a state title during the Texas 4-H roundup state competitions. The Young County 4-H Livestock Judging team earned the sheep and goat judging state title.

“We won sheep and goats, but had a rough time and did not fare very well in the rest of it,” Young County 4-H Coordinator Justin Rogers said. “A species state championship is still a pretty good deal.”

Graham Rotary Club presents $13,500 endowment to NCTC

The Graham Rotary Club presented North Central Texas College with an endowment scholarship of $13,500 Tuesday at their weekly meeting held at NCTC, donating toward the continuing education of area students.

The endowment money was raised from the Rotary Club Duck Derby sponsorships. Rotary Club President Pam Scott said the club has noticed the importance of the campus for the community.

The next cut: Vaughan begins as GRMC’s new surgeon

Doctor Steven Vaughan became Graham’s second general surgeon and will work next to Doctor Donald Behr after starting at Graham Regional Medical Center this past week.

Vaughan comes to Graham from Tucson, Ariz., where he ran a private practice for 18 years. Vaughan had his medical training at the University of Arizona and surgery training at Texas Tech University-El Paso, where he was chief resident in his final year.

GRT set to perform at Memorial Auditorium

Graham Regional Theatre will perform their annual summer musical, “Annie,” June 21-23 and 28-30 at Graham Memorial Auditorium.

“(Our summer musical) is usually a larger cast, a larger set and a larger crowd,” GRT Director Christian Sanders said. “That is why we love having the opportunity to perform over at Memorial Auditorium.”

GRT has been performing their annual summer musical at Graham Memorial Auditorium since their inception in 2002. The organization opted to keep the tradition going after they opened their black box theater, The Perry, in 2016.

New Century Veteran’s Memorial names to be added

The New Century Veteran’s Memorial will see new names added and amendments made for the first time since its dedication last year.

The 16 additions and corrections will be engraved June 25 and the unveiling of the new additions and amendments will be on July 4, alongside the parade and other events.

“This will be the first addition that we do, and we will do one every year as the names are contributed or we find ones that were forgotten,” NCVM Committee member Knox Bishop said.

Art at the OPOMAC opening reception Friday

For eight years artists from around the nation have submitted works to be displayed at the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center show Art at the OPOMAC, and Friday the annual show will once again be hosted at the art center.

The Art at the OPOMAC is a juried art show which will be on display Friday, June 21 through Wednesday, July 31 at the OPOMAC. A public reception for the show will be held June 21 at the OPOMAC with the show’s judge Randy Meador and the artists showing their work.
