Young County says farewell to former Sheriff Bryan Walls

Hundreds of friends, family members, law enforcement officials and community members gathered at First Baptist Church, Pioneer Cemetery and Young County Arena to remember and say goodbye to former Young County Sheriff Bryan Walls on Friday.

Walls died Monday, May 27, in Fort Worth. He served as Young County Sheriff from 2005 to 2016. Prior to his time as Sheriff, Walls also served in the Graham Police Department.

Saturday standoff ends with suicide

The Young County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance call around 10:15 a.m. Saturday which ended with a suspect dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“At approximately 10:15 am June 1, 2019 a domestic disturbance was reported to the Young County Sheriff’s Office,” A statement from Young County Sheriff Travis Babcock reads. “The Young County Sheriff’s Office, Graham Police Department, Texas DPS, and Olney Police Department responded. Following a brief standoff with Law Enforcement Officers, the suspect succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

North Star CASA needs area volunteers

North Star Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) started serving Young County children in 2001 as a program under the umbrella of Virginia’s and Dr. Goodall’s House and is searching for volunteers.

A CASA volunteer is trained and appointed by a judge to step in when a home is no longer safe and a child must enter the foster care system. According to Virginia’s and Dr. Goodall’s House Director Trish Remington the CASA volunteers focus is on the child, giving hope and guiding the child to a safe, permanent home.

County accepts outside auditors fiscal year 2018 report

The Young County Commissioner’s received an outside audit report from Mike Edgin of Edgin, Parkman, Fleming and Fleming, PC during their meeting Tuesday, May 28.

Edgin said the county’s capital lease obligations went down $196,000 from the previous year and most of the obligations should be paid off by 2023.

The auditor added the county ended with a positive $902,848 balance than what they budgeted, primarily from receiving more tax dollars than budgeted for.

Two vehicle crash sends three to hospital

A two vehicle collision on FM 1287 near Mountain Home Road sent three to Graham Regional Medical Center with believed minor injuries Thursday morning around 9 a.m.

The driver of a white pickup truck hauling a trailer attempted to make a left-hand turn onto FM 1287 from a private drive when he struck a black Chrysler sedan traveling northbound, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Corporal Joshua Collins.

Library summer reading program ready to start next chapter

The Library of Graham’s annual Summer Reading Program will begin Tuesday, May 28, with the goal of promoting continued reading and education in Graham.

The program is meant to help students keep up with their reading skills and build upon them over the summer, Library of Graham Director Sherrie Gibson said.

“If they just veg out over the summer they don’t realize it but they do lose some of their reading skills,” she said. “If they keep reading, I have seen it in here, kids that start reading at an early age they are above everybody else in their classrooms.”

Three swear into new Graham Hospital District term

Wyatt Pettus, Suzy Graham and Sylvia Overton were sworn into new three-year terms during the Graham Hospital District’s May 21 meeting of the board of directors.

Incumbents Graham and Pettus ran uncontested in the May general elections. Overton also ran uncontested in the election after incumbent Michael Carmichael chose not to run for reelection. Overton has been serving on the board since March, replacing Carmichael after he resigned from his position.

The trio made their terms official by reading and signing the statement of officer and oath of officer.
