AgriLife Extension agents speak with commissioners

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agents and 4-H coordinators Penny Berend and Justin Rogers were on hand during the Commissioner’s Court meeting on Monday, May 13, to discuss recent and upcoming programs and projects.

Rogers said the Hay Day program the organization held on April 30 was successful.

“We had a really good program on the 30th of April, it was the largest ag producer program we have had since I have been here,” Rogers said. “We had 65 people at our annual Hay Day program and we sponsored it along with the Farm Bureau and Farmers Milling.”

GPD make drug seizure

Approximately seven grams of suspected methamphetamine was taken off the streets on Wednesday, May 8, by Graham Police Department Code Enforcement Officer B.J. Cook and his colleagues.

Cook stopped a male driving a GMC pickup truck pulling a trailer for a traffic violation on the U.S. 380 bypass. During the stop, Cook learned the man, of Wichita Falls, had his driving privileges suspended and the officer placed the subject under arrest.

GFD, SCVFD extinguishes fire on Lake Graham

The Graham Fire Department and Salt Creek Volunteer Fire Department combined efforts Thursday, May 9, to put out a mobile home fire on Lake Graham.
The departments were dispatched at 1:58 p.m. to 1525 Eastside Lake Road. The two units acted quickly and had the fire cleared by 3:19 p.m., just under an hour after they had arrived on scene.
Graham EMS and the Young County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene Thursday.

GISD approves greenhouse project for GHS

The Graham Independent School District board approved a vendor for the construction of a greenhouse at Graham High School on Wednesday.

GISD Superintendent Sonny Cruse said last year when the campus made changes with their agriculture teachers, they hired Lauren Lange for horticulture and floral design. Lange had a baby and Cruise intentionally held off purchasing a greenhouse in case she made the decision to be a stay at home mother, which would leave the school with a greenhouse, but no teacher for it.

City, County see higher sales tax rebates for March

The city of Graham and Young County will be accruing higher sales tax rebates from March. Newcastle and Olney will have lower sales tax rebates for March, but higher year-to-date payments overall.

Since 2018, the city of Graham has seen increases which exceeded their year-to-date budget, starting with 0.49% increase in January 2018 and continuing with a 2.53% increase in March 2019.

Lions Club Carnival back for 46th year

Since 1974, the Graham Noon Lions Club Carnival has brought community members a chance to have memorable moments while supporting various projects in the town. The carnival has been in town since Wednesday, May 8, and will celebrate its last day today from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Carnival Chairman Jim Senkel said this will be the 46th consecutive year which the Lions Club has ran the event.
