Early voting begins for Olney, Newcastle elections

Early voting began Monday for the two cities in Young County hosting May 4 general elections, Olney and Newcastle.

Early voting runs Monday through Friday, April 22-26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and April 29-30 from 7 am. to 7 p.m. at Newcastle City Hall, 608 Broadway, and the Olney Community Library, 807 W. Hamilton. Any registered voter can vote at either location.

Applications for ballot by mail were due in person to the Young County Elections Office by Friday, April 19 and through the mail by Tuesday, April 23.

County designates economic reinvestment zone

The Young County Commissioner’s Court held a public hearing on Monday and took action declaring land as an economic reinvestment zone for a solar farm, but remains in negations about a tax abatement for the solar company Belltown Power Texas.

Before the public hearing, the court approved the re-adoption of a resolution including guidelines and criteria to become eligible to participate in tax abatement.

Ciera Bank’s Goray retiring after 44 years

Donna Goray worked her way up from a drive-in bank teller to CFO of Ciera Bank over her career and now she is ready to begin the next chapter of her life.

Goray began her banking career in 1975 at what was then First National Bank in Graham. Senior management recognized her skills and by 1981 she had been promoted to Assistant Vice President/ Operations Officer. She was promoted into senior management in 1984 as Vice President overseeing investments, accounting and operations.

Crawfish and Cannons next weekend

Fort Belknap will be holding one of their biggest fundraisers of the year, while giving the public a chance to see its historic cannons fire.

Crawfish and Cannons will provide a visitor with a pound of crawfish or catfish, potatoes and corn for $10. The fort will start serving food around 11:30 a.m. With cannon firings following shortly after.

“We will shoot the cannon just as many times as we possibly can,” Fort Belknap Director Jim Hammond said. “I would say every hour on the hour, but last year we did it like every 45 minutes or so.”

Graham hosts Special Teams relays

Several Graham students showed off their athletic ability during Friday afternoon’s Special Teams Track Meet.

Hundreds of students filled the home side of the stadium along with the Rompin Stomping Big Blue Band performing.

Athletes from Crestview, Woodland, Graham Junior High and Graham High School competed in several events including field events and track events.
