GMA gives tips on the Flu

As we enter the heart of flu season Nurse Practitioner Teresa McGuinnes at Graham Medical Associates gave tips on how to avoid the virus and being proactive if the flu develops.

The family nurse practitioner said  she saw nearly 30 patients with flu during a five hour period on Monday.

“Right now, it is school aged kids because if they go to day care or school, all the people are in close quarters and I have seen a lot (of children).” McGuinnes said.

Two arrested after knife reported at courthouse

Around 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6 reports of a person with a knife at the Young County Courthouse came over dispatch and minutes later two people were in custody.

Eston Tracy Green, 34, and Tamedra Perry, 27, were both charged with tampering with or fabricating evidence with intent to impair, a third degree felony. If found guilty they could face two to 10 years in the Texas Department of Corrections and a fine up to $10,000.

Police Chaplain continues fight against leukemia

Gary Tull is a pastor, community leader, law enforcement chaplain and a fighter. Three weeks ago, Tull entered round two in his battle against leukemia.

Tull said he and his family moved to Graham in 1986 to become pastor of his first church. A few years later he became chaplain, a volunteer position, for the Graham Police Department, Young County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety.

City continues search for Police Chief, Young County Arena Manager

The city of Graham has continued their search for both a new Graham Police Department Chief and Young County Arena Manager. City Manager Brandon Anderson gave a progress report to the city council on Thursday for the two positions.

Former Police Chief Tony Widner announced his plans to retire in Aug. 2018, with an effective date of Tuesday, Jan. 1. The council approved Assistant Chief Brent Bullock on Thursday, Jan. 10, to serve as Interim Police Chief of GPD while the city was looking for a replacement.

LCS:PK Women's Club hosting upcoming events

The Possum Kingdom Women's Club has been a part of the community by supporting other non-profits and schools for 50 years.

"We do fundraising for scholarships for Graford High School," Jo Lynn Miller, the club's publicity chair, said. "We have four people on scholarships that we are following through their semesters in college."

She said each year the club awards two $500 scholarships to recent high school graduates and two scholarships to college students who they have been following.

GISD releases calendar options for 2019-2020

Graham Independent School District has released two calendar options for the 2019-2020 school year allowing the community to vote on their preference.

“The district calendar committee, which is comprised of staff, parents and community members, always build several draft calendars,” GISD Superintendent Sonny Cruse said. “Then we look at them and get some feedback from the campuses and narrow it down to two. After that we send it out to staff and parents for a vote.”

Humane Society of Young County making progress

Almost four months ago the Humane Society of Young County announced it would be shutting its doors, but regardless the shelter managed to stay open and is holding steady according to Director Hollie Larance.

The shelter board announced on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018 the shelter would be closing their door due to lack of funding. Larance, who was serving as director of the shelter at the time, fought to keep the shelter open and raised enough money in a crowdfunding campaign to keep the shelter going.

Time to clean out your storage 

The Young County Masonic Lodge #485 is seeking items to be sold at their 12th annual public consignment auction in March, an event which raises funds to present county students with scholarships.

The old Ag Barn in Graham will host visitors, looking for the chance to secure anything from firearms to fax machines, on Saturday, March 9.

Past consignment sales by the Masons have included items from the city of Graham, Young County, Olney ISD, Archer City ISD, Newcastle ISD as well as various local individuals and businesses.
