Petition created to dissolve Graham Hospital District

A petition was created through a public Facebook group to dissolve the Graham Hospital District on Tuesday.

The Graham Hospital District was proposed and accepted in 2013 and since that time Graham Regional Medical Center has collected taxes within their district which spans outside of Graham. The creator of the public group Graham Texas Hospital Opinion, Lacy Sweeney Bond, who declined to comment, posted the petition on the group’s page on Tuesday and established a post office box in Graham to submit the petition. 

City of Graham approves budget and same tax rate

The Graham City Council approved the 2019 fiscal year budget and tax rate of 0.658126 per $100 valuation on Thursday during a special called meeting.

The tax rate approved by the council remains the same as last year due to the city receiving more revenue from increased valuation of existing properties and the addition of new properties to the tax role. City Manager Brandon Anderson presented during the city’s second budget meeting the increased valuations which had grown by $15,162,990 from the 2017 valuation to $382,996,939.

P.E.T.S. spay and neuter clinic coming to Graham

P.E.T.S. Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic from Wichita Falls announced a planned expansion into Young County on Tuesday.

P.E.T.S. was recently awarded a $50,000 grant from Watershed Animal Fund which it will use to fund the satellite site at the Young County Humane Society in Graham. The organization was formed in April 2007 to combat the overpopulation of unwanted pets in the Wichita Falls community.

LCS: New truck on its way to PK VFD

The Possum Kingdom East Fire and Ambulance Auxiliary has purchased a new fire truck for the PK East Volunteer Fire Department.

Carol Stanford, auxiliary member, said the auxiliary purchased the vehicle from Steele Fire Apparatus of Haskell for $67,537. The money comes from the sales the auxiliary holds on the third Saturday of each month except December which is held on the second Saturday. The VFD informed the auxiliary for the need of a new truck in December 2017.

LCS: North Texas Giving Day is Thursday

Palo Pinto County nonprofit organizations will be taking donations Thursday, Sept. 20, during the 18 hour long fundraising event North Texas Giving Day.

North Texas Giving Day is an area fundraiser where for 18 hours donations can be provided to nonprofits in a 20-county area. Palo Pinto County joins 19 other North Texas counties during the online giving day with over 2,767 registered nonprofits.

Young County raises tax rate, releases budget

Despite disagreements, the Young County Commissioner’s Court approved a new tax rate and budget for the county.

However, the new tax rate will increase from  $0.751300 to $0.758613 per $100 valuation; the increase will add $7.31 of taxes to proprety valued at $100,000. The rate was originally proposed at $0.799000. The effective rate was set at $0.735903 and the rollback rate was $0.799323.

Palo Pinto and Young Counties lift burn ban

Palo Pinto County Commissioners’ Court ended its burn ban on Sept. 4 after it had been in place since Aug. 27 and the Young County Commissioners’ Court ended its burn ban on Monday after it had been in place since July 9.

This means there is no longer a ban which prevented people from burning trash or brush or have an open campfire in any unincorporated area of the counties.
