Scholarship program coming up Monday

The 32nd annual Graham High School Scholarship Presentation will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the Graham Memorial Auditorium, and will continue a legacy that has benefited Graham seniors since 1972. Last year, over 70 scholarship were handed out to the GHS graduating class of 2017 during the awards ceremony. Approximately $100,000 in local scholarship money will be presented to the GHS class of 2018, according to a GISD press release. The public is invited to attend the event as seniors are honored with scholarships by 80 different local benefactors, clubs and alumni.

After son’s murder, Lori Brown works toward a safer society

Tuesday will be the one-year anniversary of day that no one in Graham wants to recall, and a day that Lori Brown will remember for the rest of her life. On May 1, 2017 Harrison Brown, a 2016 graduate of Graham High School and son of Lori and Dr. Kurt Brown, died of injuries sustained during a stabbing spree by a fellow student on the University of Texas campus that also injured three other male students. Brown was murdered by Kindred J. White, 21, who is still facing trial for the murder and is attempting to plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

Young County recognizes Purple Heart veterans

Young County has joined Graham to be recognized as a Purple Heart County under the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH), and honor those who have been injured or killed risking their lives for the country. Young County commissioners approved the proclamation Monday and were joined by MOPH State Senior Vice Commander and Chapter President Jon Lunkwicz and MOPH Chapter 1513 Commander Gus Wittschack at the meeting. The MOPH is located in Springfield, Va., and is a nationwide organization with chapters in Guam to Puerto Rico.

GHS students advance to TSA national competition

Two teams of students and one individual student of Graham High School will be advancing to the national competition for the Technology Student Association in Atlanta, Ga. this summer. The TSA is a national organization of students studyingscience, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and is open for students enrolled in or who have completed technology education courses.

Graham man dead after three-vehicle crash

A Graham man died Saturday in a rainy-weather three-vehicle crash near Springtown. Texas Department of Public Safety said at 10:22 a.m. April 21, troopers investigated the crash, on Hwy. 199 near Oak Creek Drive. Their initial investigation indicates Brandon A. Gomez, 18, of Graham was driving a 2018 Ford Fusion sedan eastbound on Hwy. 199 when he tried to pass another vehicle. Though he was in a passing zone, DPS said he failed to yield to oncoming traffic and hit the left side of a westbound 2005 Ford Explorer. GISD accepting second round of ‘Hall of Honor’ nominations

In January Graham ISD partnered with the Graham Public Education Foundation to honor 14 alumni in their new Hall of Honor program, and are looking again to honor staff and community members who have provided meritorious service to the district and/or their profession. The program was approved last year at a GISD school board meeting on Sept. 13. Nominations for the second group of honorees will be accepted through Wednesday, June 27. The application packet is available at on the GISD Facebook page and a copy can be picked up at the Graham ISD administration office.

New Century Veterans Memorial closer to funds goal

The Young County New Veterans Memorial has almost achieved their goal of $125,000, receiving a matching grant of $12,000 recently from the L.F. and Carla Perry Foundation, but the organization is still looking for donations. The Young County New Century Veterans Memorial Project is a nonprofit project to raise funding for the design and construction of an expansion to the current Young County Veterans Memorial.

Fundraisers aim to help Crestview student fighting cancer

Young County Greater Good project is holding a golf scramble and online auction fundraiser for a Graham child who’s battling a rare form of leukemia. James Steege, 7, is a Crestview Elementary student whose family just found out within the last month that James has Acute B-Cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He is currently at Cooks Children’s Hospital where he is undergoing aggressive chemotherapy, blood transfusions and spinal taps. James is the son of Victoria and Johnathan, both Army veterans, also have a 5-year-old daughter with a rare disease.
