Sales taxes remain strong for county, city of Graham

The city of Graham and Young County continue to perform well in accruing sales tax rebates in July, continuing an upward trend seen so far this year.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $842.7 million in local sales tax allocations for August, 8.2 percent more than in August 2017.

These allocations are based on sales made in July by businesses that report tax monthly.

County approves the transfer of the ‘old ag barn’ to the city

Young County on Monday approved the transfer of the Young County Agricultural Activity Center (the Old Ag Barn) located at Fireman’s Park to the city of Graham due to a request by the city to obtain possession of the property.

The item was originally proposed by Precinct 4 Commissioner Jimmy Wiley during a July 9 meeting of the Young County Commissioners Court. The city of Graham met on Thursday, Aug. 9 to give the commissioners approval to provide the city with a quitclaim of interest to transfer the property which the commissioners approved on Monday, Aug. 13.

City of Graham continues 2018-19 budget discussions

The Graham City Council continued their discussions Tuesday on the proposed budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year, narrowing down the capital request for each city department and presenting the city’s valuation data.

In total the requests amounted to $589,400, but not all requests by each department were accepted. City Manager Brandon Anderson said on Tuesday at the second budget meeting that he budgeted $389,000 in the general fund of the amount requested, with a planned progress report six months into the year.

Graham Art Guild member killed in car crash

Two men died in a head-on collision in Jack County on Wednesday, Aug. 1 including the 2018 Art at the OPOMAC winner of Best of Show.

Engineer, Newport Volunteer Firefighter and artist Jan Russell “Rusty” Cook, 57, of Jack County, was traveling south shortly before 9 a.m. on Hwy. 59 about 20 miles north of Jacksboro when his 2018 Dodge Caravan was struck by a 2017 Ford F-150 driven by Colby Charles Cosper, 35, of Clifton.

Local playwright named finalist in national competition

Ben “Jiggs” Burgess, of Graham, and his play “The Girl in the White Pinafore” were named a finalist at the Eugene O’Neill 2018 National Playwrights Conference.

The National Playwrights Conference was founded in 1964 and is now one of the nations top programs for developing and launching new plays by emerging and establishing playwrights.

“The Girl in the White Pinafore” was named one of the top 55 plays out of the 1,429 plays received during the submission process. However, it was not one of the eight plays chosen to be performed by the conference.

Lake Country Art Show winners announced

With over 190 entries from 42 artist from the Texoma area, the 52nd Lake Country Art Show drew a crowd on Saturday for their reception and awards ceremony at the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center.

Artists from Mineral Wells, Breckenridge, Graham, Wichita Falls, Weatherford and more presented their pieces to judge Kay Brubaker at the OPOMAC. Brubaker is president of the  Carlsbad Art Association and director of the Artist Galley in Carlsbad.
