Annual Cars & Stars coming up Saturday

For all motorheads or those with a love of all things old and new, the Graham Cars & Stars car show will be free on the downtown square this Saturday starting at 10 a.m. Pre-registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. and the show will start at 10 a.m. with judging beginning at noon and awards at 3:30 p.m. After the awards ceremony a cruise with the cars will be at 4 p.m. and the day will end with block party from 5 to 8 p.m. with food, cover band Kicked to the Curb and a movie at dusk on the square.

Graham is now ‘Purple Heart City’

The Graham City Council on Thursday approved the city to be recognized as a Purple Heart City under the Military Order of the Purple Heart, to honor those who have been injured or killed risking their lives for the county. The MOPH is located in Springfield, Va., and is a nationwide organization with chapters from Guam to Puerto Rico. The order includes 46,000 members in six regions with 49 state departments and 478 chapters. Veteran Greg Coker, who is a member of the MOPH, brought the idea before the council at its Feb. 8 meeting and nominated the city for the honor.

‘Child Abuse Awareness Month’ shares its message

Every year blue ribbons are placed both down Elm Street and on the square, and the ribbons share a message of awareness of child abuse within the community. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and the ribbons symbolize children who have been abused, neglected or have died from child abuse.

Virginia’s House, a children’s advocacy center in Graham, wraps the ribbons around trees in town in order to raise awareness during the month of April.

Liability concern causes pause in Salt Creek Park project

Back in October 2017, progress was being made on the Salt Creek Park project with a contract that took the Army Corps of Engineers out of the picture, but contractual problems have halted the project again, Mayor Jack Graham said at Thursday’s city council meeting. The Salt Creek Park project is one that started in the late 1990s and over the years has had many delays from the Brazos River Authority and the Army Corps of Engineers who were involved in the project to turn the floodplain along Salt Creek into a park for the city of Graham.

GISD campuses win grants for several upgrade projects

Graham ISD campuses were announced as winners at the beginning of March in the 3rd quarter of the Patterson Gives Back program and were awarded $4,000 for the district on March 22 in Wichita Falls. Patterson Gives Back is organized by the Patterson Auto Group of Wichita Falls, so that Texoma area schools have the opportunity to receive a donation for any project or item that the campus needs or desires. The group is giving away $45,000 this year with $15,000 given each quarter.

New Veterans Memorial Committee seeks input, changes on names

The New Century Veterans Memorial Committee has announced the names that will be engraved on the new memorial and the organization wants feedback to make sure those names are correct. The first list is of those who served prior to 2000 and will show those who served prior to 2000 and were not included on the old memorial. The second list contains those who served after 2000, which includes those who are presently serving or have served since 2000. Both lists appear below.

Deadline for Mason auction items Friday

Those planning to showcase items at the Young County Masonic Lodge auction on Saturday have until noon Friday to bring their items to the old ag barn in Fireman’s Park. The Young County Masonic Lodge is hosting their 11th annual public consignment auction Saturday at the old ag barn in Fireman’s Park at 9 a.m. The auction provides local scholarships for county students. Doors open for the event at 7 a.m. and all items must be brought to Fireman’s Park beginning at 8 a.m.

Young County sees a drop in early voting totals

The March 6 primary election had a slow start with early voting totals numbering 1,305 in Young County, an 11.19 percent turnout from among 11,658 registered voters, according to Young County Elections Administrator Lauren Sullivan. In the March primary election in 2016, Young County had a total of 1,814 voters during early voting, an 15.66 percent turnout from among the 11,581 registered voters. Icy weather conditions during the first days of early voting this year led Sullivan to close the polls on Wednesday, Feb. 21 and reopen them on Thursday, Feb. 22.

Numbers promising for county’s new hotel/motel tax

Young County received its first month’s hotel occupancy tax which brought in $2,307.31 from the Wildcatter Ranch and Resort and Spa, showing a good outlook for the fund established to promote Fort Belknap. In December, Young County commissioners passed a resolution establishing a hotel occupancy tax of 5 percent in all unincorporated areas to continue indefinitely after Jan. 1 unless voted down by a majority of the Commissioners Court.
