Trinity creates award to honor late Graham councilman

Trinity University in San Antonio will be presenting one football player each year with an award honoring one of Graham’s own: the Spencer Street Tiger Leadership Award. Spencer Boyd Street III passed away July 29, 2016 at age 49. He was in his fifth year serving on the Graham City Council at that time, and active in Graham Rotary Club, North Texas Oil and Gas board, and as an assistant Boy Scout Master and Eagle Scout from Troop 92 in Graham.

Lions Clubs bringing big top circus to Graham next week

The Lions Clubs of Graham are bringing the old-fashioned, one-ring, big-top Culpepper & Merriweather Circus to Graham, on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The circus will set up in the lot between U.S. 380 East and Craig Street (near the fair barn), with 90-minute performances at 5 and 7:30 p.m. that day. Now in its 32nd edition, C&M Circus has become known for quality family entertainment. The circus has been featured in National Geographic’s Explorer TV series, Entertainment Tonight, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, and Arizona Highways Magazine.

Blair trial: Minkley accepts plea and provides testimony

After accepting a plea deal Wednesday that would give him life in prison, Bill Minkley’s testimony Thursday disclosed more on the events leading to the death of Leah Martin. There was no indication if the plea deal taken by Minkley will affect his possible involvement in two other murders that took place in Fort Worth in 2014, which caused Minkley to be transferred from the Young County jail to a Tarrant County facility.

City passes 2017-18 tax rate and budget

The City of Graham passed their 2017-18 budget and total tax rate Thursday, a rate of $0.658126 per $100 valuation and a number higher than the previous fiscal year. “(The tax levy) is five percent over the effective tax rate,” City Manager Brandon Anderson said. The fiscal budget for this year will raise more revenue from property taxes than last year’s budget by $214,585 or a 5 percent increase. The city approved a total tax rate of $0.658126 per $100 valuation, compared to the effective tax rate of 0.639483 per $100 valuation and the rollback rate of $0.696052 per $100 valuation.

The Caleb Larson Memorial Foundation holds tenth rodeo fundraiser

The tenth annual Memorial Ranch Rodeo for the Caleb Larson Foundation Cowbin’ for the Kids will take place this weekend at the Young County Arena with a multitude of events. The Caleb Larson Foundation nonprofit was started by Brandi Larson in 2008 as a memorial for her son, Caleb Larson, who was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma childhood cancer at the age of 3.

City’s September sales tax rebate continues upward trend

The city of Graham’s sales tax rebate dropped 4.5 percent this month, compared with the same month last year, after three months in a row of rebates that were up over the previous year. Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $668.3 million in local sales tax allocations for September, 6.2 percent more than in September 2016.

Graham Area United Way kicks off 2017 fundraising season

Graham Area United Way has raised a third of their newly announced 2017 goal of $118,000, through the efforts of local organizations. The organization had already raised $40,525, it was announced during the drive’s official kick-off Tuesday. United Way supports 14 local agencies in Graham they allocate money to every year. Funds are distributed by an allocation committee which contains members also in the executive committee and board of directors for United Way. “This year we have a challenge to raise $118,000,” United Way Director Kim Birdwell said.

War dog memorial to be placed on courthouse grounds

The Young County New Century Veterans Memorial will be getting a special addition of an animal nature, with a memorial to honor all dogs who served in the military. The memorial, called ‘Hero,’ was obtained by David Nolette and Tim Odom and was first proposed before County Judge John Bullock to be placed on the courthouse lawn. To Nolette, finding a home for the memorial was a reward in itself. “It has been a dream for the last year to make sure that Hero finds a home, a home where people can see him and remember what he is all about,” Nolette said.

County passes budget for new fiscal year; tax rate up a bit

Young County Commissioners’ passed their 2017-18 budget and total tax rate Monday, a rate of $0.751300 per $100 valuation, which is a 6.48 percent increase from last year’s rate. The county’s total tax rate is made up of the sum of the maintenance and operations rate (M&O) plus the debt service rate. The M&O rate contains the general fund, permanent improvement fund, road and bridge fund and jury fund. The debt service rate is the rate required to make the annual payment on debt accrued by the county and may move as high as necessary to cover the debt obligations of the county.
