Graham group to host candidate forum

The Young County Democratic Association is hosting a candidates forum with Daniel Epstein and Miguel Levario, two Democratic Candidates for U.S. Congress, District 19, at the North Central Texas College auditorium Saturday, July 15 at 2 p.m.

“We’re rebuilding the Democratic Party in North Texas, from the ground up, and this is just an effort to encourage grass roots participation in our region,” said YCDA president David DeLong. “We need at least two parties for our government to work well.”

Sheriff seeks funding for two K-9 officers in next budget

Young County Sheriff Travis Babcock hopes to bring a narcotics and search K-9 program back to the department and presented his proposal during budget talks before the Young County Commissioners Court on Monday, July 10. The Young County Sheriff’s Department has not had a K-9 program since November 2014, with Babcock partnered with the last K-9 serving the department. Olney and Graham police departments each are equipped with a K-9, but according to Babcock those dogs are sometimes unavailable to the county.

Local students earn spots on NCTC President’s, Dean’s honor lists

Numerous area students were named to North Central Texas College’s official listings of students recognized for outstanding academic achievement during the spring 2017 semester. Students named to the NCTC President’s Honor List are those who achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours.

Entrants sought for annual art show

It’s time for local artists to think about entering their works in the annual Lake Country Show in Graham, hosted by the Graham Art Guild and presented at the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center.

The juried show, for paid-up members of one’s local art club or guild, will be held from Saturday, Aug. 5 through Friday, Aug. 25. There is a limit of five entries per person; $25 entry fee for up to five pieces.

Registration will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 1 and 2, at the OPOMAC, and a reception will be held at the same location at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5.

Eliasville VFD uses Forest Service grant to upgrade truck

The Eliasville Volunteer Fire Department used a grant to help purchase a slip-on unit for an excess 5-ton cargo military truck.

The firefighters gave the military vehicle a new life as a firefighting machine. They painted it a non-military color, and added an extended front bumper, brush rails and a slip-on unit. The slip-on has a 1,048-gallon poly water tank and foam capability.

The grant was made by the Texas A&M Forest Service Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program.

Woman found dead in second of two weekend searches

Public searches for two missing Young County women were held over the weekend, with one search ending with a woman found, the other in tragedy for a Graham family. A search led by the Young County Sheriff’s Office began early Sunday afternoon for Cindy Berend, 64, of Chaparral Drive in Graham. Sheriff Travis Babcock said in a Facebook post that Berend went for a walk in the morning, as was her habit, but failed to return. Within hours, first responders were working from a command post set up at Graham Bible Church, on FM 61 across from Fawn Trail.

District Court announces May pleas

Cases pleaded in the 90th Judicial District Court in May are:

• Adams Rene Tovar, 23, of Graham, pleaded true to the allegations in the state’s motion to adjudicate community supervision for the offense of possession of controlled substance less than 1 gram - methamphetamine, and was sentenced to 12 months confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – State Jail Division (TDCJ-SJ), and to pay the remaining fine, restitution and court costs.

TxDOT to host Graham meeting

The public is invited to attend a Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) meeting at four different locations in July, including one in Graham.

The Graham meeting takes place from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 11 at the Graham area office of the Texas Department of Transportation, 848 U.S. 380 West in Graham. The formal presentation takes place at 5:30 p.m.

A TIP is a capital improvement program developed cooperatively by local and state transportation entities. It includes a list of multi-modal transportation projects, such as highway, transit and bicycle, for example.
