It’s time to sink or swim for GRT’s ‘The Little Mermaid’

The Graham Regional Theatre closes their 2016-17 year with a summer musical performance of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” which will be showing for two weeks starting Friday, June 23, at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Auditorium.


GRT Director Christian Sanders has been working with a cast of over 40 members for the last five weeks to make sure the performance is ready for its debut Friday.  Preparation for the scheduling of show must be done far in advance though, Sanders said.

State renames stretch of U.S. 380 in honor of WWII hero

The portion of U.S. 380 from Graham eastward to the limits of Bryson in Jack County will be designated as the Henry H. King Memorial Highway after the decision passed in the 85th legislative session.


King served in the Army during World War II, and as a prisoner of war survived the Bataan Death March and the destruction of Nagasaki by atomic bomb.


Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed HB 216 on March 26, to be effective immediately. The bill was first filed by District 68 Rep. Drew Springer on Nov. 14, 2016, and passed both the Texas House and Senate.

City’s June sales tax rebate leaps up almost 5.5 percent


The city of Graham had, for the first time in many months, a rise in sales taxes returned to the city, compared with the same month last year.


Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $640 million in local sales tax allocations for June, 3.6 percent more than in June 2016. These allocations are based on sales made in April by businesses that report tax monthly.

Graham Regional Theater Camp to perform "The Lion King Jr.”

For a second year the Graham Regional Theatre is hosting their Youth Summer Camp which leads up to a performance of “The Lion King Jr.,” Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium.


“The Lion King Jr.” is two-act musical adapted from the larger musical version of “The Lion King,” that will be performed entirely by the children in the GRT Youth Summer Camp. The play was chosen based on being a well known story, GRT Director Christian Sanders said.

Thieves steal porcelain gasoline signs

Thieves struck a Graham business not once, but twice, making off with huge, valuable vintage advertising signs.


On May 9, the Young County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a theft of large antique porcelain signs.


Sometime between Friday, May 5 and Sunday, May 7, thieves stole 15 gas station signs from Hawkins Pump and Supply, located at 276 U.S. 380 West in Graham.


The signs were described as one each, advertising Amco, Texaco, Shamrock, Mobil Oil, Deep Rock, Magnolia Gasoline and Phillips 66, along with eight other signs of unknown brand.

Manhunt suspect charged with evading arrest

A helicopter buzzed the skies and search dogs scrambled through the woods Tuesday morning (June 6) in south Graham as authorities searched for a man who fled a deputy just prior to midnight.


The man, David Ray Pearson Jr., 26, was caught later that same day by North Richland Hills Police Department officers. Young County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy John Orr said his office planned to pick up Pearson from Tarrant County Jail yesterday.

Library’s Leader digitization project coming online

The first steps towards the digitization of 136 rolls of microfilmed archives of The Graham Leader have been taken by the Library of Graham through the University of North Texas’ program, The Portal to Texas History.


The Portal to Texas History is an online resource for rare, historical and primary source materials from or about Texas that was created by and is maintained by the University of North Texas Libraries. The Portal has hundreds of content partners across the state who provide a growing collection of resources online.

2017 Food Truck Championship of Texas

The 2017 Food Truck Championship of Texas took place on the Graham downtown square last Saturday and attracted droves of visitors from all around who wanted a bite to eat.

Food trucks came from all around to compete for the $10,000 grand championship prize that this year was won by The Gypsy Kit for a second time. The Gypsy Kit also won the prize during the first food truck event in 2015 and were beaten the second year in 2016 by the food truck Bite my Biscuit.
