Ceremony continues decades-old scholarship tradition

More than 70 scholarships were handed out Monday night to the Graham High School class of 2017 during their scholarship awards ceremony at the Memorial Auditorium. The program has benefited seniors in Graham since 1972, according to historical information collected by former Dean of Students Pauline Guinn Jones. In 1972 GISD Superintendent Garth Baker appointed Jones to the position of dean of students and gave her the task of finding more scholarships for the school. At the time, the only scholarship available for students in Graham was the I.T. Kilmer Scholarship for $250.

Graham ISD board voices voucher law concerns

The Graham ISD school board signed an anti-voucher resolution on Tuesday, April 11, to show their opposition to SB 3, which if passed by the legislature would reduce the amount of public education funding those schools receive. One of the major concerns about the bill is that it would take money from public schools and give that same funding to private schools, which are not held to the same state rules traditional public schools, GISD Superintendent Sonny Cruse said. “It only affects 17 counties in the state of Texas right now, but it does in my opinion represent bad public school policy beca

Burglars pick through unlocked vehicles Wednesday night

Car burglars struck again this week, this time taking not one, but two firearms among other possessions from around 10 unlocked vehicles Wednesday night. This is the second instance within a month where car burglars have broken into vehicles in the same southeastern Graham neighborhood without having to force entry. The first spree occurred March 7, when more than six vehicles were broken into overnight, but Graham Police Chief Tony Widner said the crimes are not specific to one area in the city.

One act play going to state!

Graham High School One Act Play, led by theater arts teacher Salley Maxey, far right, advanced from the Area contest on March 31 to the Regional UIL competition at Texas Tech on Thursday, April 6. At that competition, they were chosen to advance to State competition, and Jessica Burgess was recognized as Best Actress and Kristin Spring was Honorable Mention All Star Cast. Graham results from the Area contest included: Tech Award, Diana Gates; Honorable Mention All Star Cast, Nick Moore; All Star Cast, Kristin Spring; and Best Actress, Jessica Burgess.

Rollover wreck on U.S. 380 West sends woman to hospital

Wrecks kept emergency responders busy Wednesday, with two major accidents taking place within a couple of hours. At 1:08 p.m. March 29, a wreck with injuries was reported on U.S. 380 West at Bullock Road, which is about 9 miles northwest of Graham. A woman driving a blue Ford Fusion eastbound appeared to have driven onto the shoulder on her side of the road, then overcorrected, causing her to lose control of her sedan.

State investigating Wednesday house fire

Fire gutted a vacant house before dawn Wednesday, and the state fire marshal is looking into the cause. A call came in to 911 at 4:49 a.m. March 29, of a structure fire on Rodgers Drive at Red Bud Circle in Graham. The fire had been spotted by a passer-by, who then made the call to emergency services. According to Capt. Greg Speck of the Graham Fire Department, when the first fire truck arrived, flames were already shooting through the roof of the ranch-style brick home.

County hires McCallum as emergency management coordinator

Young County Judge John Bullock recently announced Wayne McCallum was hired as Young County emergency management coordinator in February, while the judge will remain as the county’s emergency management director. McCallum has lived in Graham since 2002 and in September of this year will have served as the county’s Veterans Service Officer for seven years. He has served the needs of veterans and their families and works with between 1,400 to 1,700 veterans in Young County. Both county positions are part-time for McCallum, who said this is his first time working in a position such as EMC.
