Bill breathes life back into Salt Creek Park

A recent move in Congress may finally mean construction could begin on the long-delayed Salt Creek Park project, the City Council announced Thursday. On Dec. 8, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a comprehensive water resources infrastructure bill that included all the wording from a bill sponsored by then-U.S. Representative for Texas’s 19th congressional district Randy Neugebauer. The bill’s purpose was to take the Salt Creek project away from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers so it can be handled, instead, by the Brazos River Authority.

Man pleads guilty in jail fight death

A Jacksboro resident has been sentenced to 20 months in state jail in the 2015 beating death of a man while both were inmates in the Young County Detention Center. Christopher Nathan Cunningham, 25, accepted a plea bargain in 90th District Court in Graham last month, pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide in the July 13, 2015 death of 45-year-old John Belyeu. Cunningham was also ordered to pay a $2,000 fine and court costs. “He had been incarcerated on another charge,” said 90th District Attorney Dee Peavy.

New faces at GPD

Officers Holly Ferguson and Olton Kirk Freeman are sworn in as officers for the Graham Police Department by Municipal Court Judge Teresa Bishop on Thursday, Jan. 12. Officer Freeman comes from the Throckmorton area and previously was working as a jailer at the Young County Sheriff’s Department. Officer Ferguson comes from the Denton area and is a certified EMT and firefighter.

Hard work pays off at 2017 Youth Livestock Show, Fair

Kazhual Whittenburg, of Lone Star 4-H, holds tight to his lamb during the Young County Junior Livestock Show Thursday evening at the Young County Arena. Whittenburg won second place in the Junior Showmanship class, which gave exhibitors 14 years of age and younger the chance to display their showmanship skills. The fair continues today with steer shows beginning at 9 a.m., and the premium sale at 6 p.m., all at the Young County Arena.

Taking a ride-along with YCSO deputies

Editor’s note: Graham Leader reporter Thomas Wallner rode along with two Young County Sheriff’s Department deputies during parts of two shifts on Saturday, Jan. 7. The following is Wallner’s account of that time. Day shift Deputy Paul Hemphill pulled out of the Sheriff’s office parking lot at 3 p.m., then continued on his normal day shift as a deputy in the Young County Sheriff’s Office. Hemphill has worked with the sheriff’s department for two years full-time and four years part-time. He worked as a paramedic while serving as a reserve deputy and also previously was a firefighter.

Lewis will be remembered for service

Leader Staff Report editor@grahamleader.com Graham is mourning the death Thursday of Samuel Odis Lewis, a World War II veteran and oil and gas producer who left a tangible mark on the community. Lewis, born April 25, 1925, came to Young County as a toddler and lived here most of his life. “I grew up with him out at Bunger,” said Guy Farquharson. “He had it pretty rough growing up out there in the ‘30s and ‘40s. Those were hard times.

NCTC to hold LVN info sessions

North Central Texas College Graham Campus will offer information sessions for those interested in becoming a licensed vocational nurse through NCTC’s LVN program. Interested people are encouraged to attend one of several sessions held in January and February. Attending an information session is the first step in the process to be accepted into the LVN program and is required to apply to the program. Spouses or parents are welcome to attend but children are not allowed. Potential students only need to attend one session to meet the program requirement.
