Water supply corp. seeks board applicants

The Fort Belknap Water Supply Corp. is accepting applications to serve on its board of directors until Feb. 7. There are three positions open, which will be decided on the April 8 ballot. Terms run from April 2017 to Apri 2020. The board meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. Those interested in election to the board may call 940-549-6922 or go by the corporations’ office at 315 5th St. in Graham for more information and/or to pick up an application. Directors whose terms are expiring are Charles Birdwell, Rita Choat and Gary Reger.

Lake Country Sun to return as weekly, free newspaper

This is the last time the Lake Country Sun will appear as a single page in the Graham Leader, because the Sun will once again be created and printed as its own publication. On Wednesday, Jan. 18, the Sun will return to newsstands around Possum Kingdom Lake, while also becoming a weekly supplement to the Leader. The Sun was established in 1987 as a bi-weekly newspaper, then became a weekly serving Possum Kingdom and Palo Pinto County.

Deaths, crime, water bills top news in July, August 2016

As we wrap up 2016 and prepare to venture into the new year, the Graham Leader is taking a look back at the local news that happened over the past 12 months. We continue this series with July and August of 2016. July • The body of a white male was found in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 2, after the Graham Police Department responded to a report of suspicious circumstances in the 1000 block of Loving Highway.

Making matters official

Young County Judge John Bullock gives the oath of office to eight county elected officials on Sunday, Jan. 1 in the Young County courthouse. In the audience were family, friends and employees of those taking the oath. See page 10 for more photos from oath-of-office events.

Graham sales tax rebates stay consistent

The city of Graham saw a drop of 3.64 percent in the amount of sales taxes returned to the city for December, and year-to-date the city’s rebates are down 6.35 percent. Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $627.6 million in local sales tax allocations for December, 0.2 percent more than in December 2015. These allocations are based on sales made in October by monthly filers. “The cities of Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, El Paso and San Antonio continue to see significant increases in sales tax allocations,” Hegar said.

Man arrested on numerous child pornography charges

A 70-year-old man has been arrested on charges he was in possession of child pornography. According to Young County jail records, Monte Carrol Wainscott was arrested on 15 charges of possession/promotion of child pornography at 10:11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, by a DPS trooper. DPS said Wainscott was arrested on 14 charges, not 15. He was arrested on True Road in northern Young County. As of Tuesday, he remained in custody at the Young County jail with bond set at $225,000.

Alcohol OK’d for food truck event

There were no objections by the Graham city council regarding an alcohol variance on the square for the 2017 Food Truck Championship. A request for a variance on ordinance 540 about possession and consuming alcoholic beverages on the city square during the event unanimously passed during last Thursday’s council meeting. “The CVB (Convention and Visitors Bureau Board) is kind of getting to the point where they know how to run this thing a little more efficiently now and they are getting their request in.

Sweet holiday tradition spans generations

Graham resident Mary Braddock held her annual “Cookie Day” celebration last Friday at her home on Westwood Drive, where she provided thousands of free cookies to about 375 Graham residents, some of whom she did not even know. The treats were of all different varieties, including gluten-free cookies and an abundance of sugar cookies. Braddock makes the sugar cookies herself, usually a day or two before the event, but she said most of the cookies are made on the day of the celebration.

County may finally get arrival OK on new voting machines

Young County’s new voting machines – which were purchased in 2014 – are expected to be delivered on Jan. 3 Election Administrator Lauren Sullivan said. Young County purchased 65 of the Verity 2.0 voting machines and other necessary equipment from Hart InterCivic two and a half years ago for $330,000. The process of getting certification on the machines both federally and through the state has delayed the machines making their way to Young County. “I really do think it is going to be the best thing for the county.
