GISD hears results of TEA study

Graham ISD both improved and struggled in English as a second language and special education STAAR test passing rates for the 2015-16 school year, the Texas Education Agency said. The TEA used the Performance Based Monitoring Analysis to focus on school district effectiveness within its bilingual/ESL, special education, CTE and Title I programs. The report is done annually to show districts what is, and isn’t, working. Each program receives scores in various categories on a scale of 0-4. The lower the result, the better the score.

Beer, wines sales won’t start immediately after voters OK measure

It’s going to be six to eight weeks at a minimum before stores in Graham will stock shelves with beer and wine after a measure to allow off-premise sales of those beverages passed in Tuesday’s General election. The local-option election in Graham has passed with 1,855 votes in favor, and 1,482 against. The measure garnered a total of 3,337 votes for and against, which is 54 percent of the 6,181 registered voters in the city of Graham. Local option measure passes in Graham

UPDATE, 8:19 p.m.: With all votes counted, the local-option election in Graham has passed with 1,855 votes in favor, and 1,482 against.

UPDATE, 7:50 p.m.: Results were just released that include both early and absentee voters, and the vote remains in favor of allowing off-premise sales of beer and wine in Graham.

The new totals are 1,534 in favor of the measure, and 1,285 against.

Record numbers make way to polls in Young County

NOTE: We will be updating this site tonight, Nov. 8, with live results of the elections in Young County.

More than half of Young County’s voters chose to mark their General Election ballots early, setting records while they did so.

According to county elections administrator Lauren Sullivan, 5,586 people went to the polls in person during the early voting period, which began Oct. 24 and wrapped up Friday. In Young County there are 11,756 registered voters which is up around 450 voters from the 2012 election.

Group hopes to create new memorial for 21st century veterans

The Young County Veterans Memorial will be getting a new addition to honor Young County veterans of the 21st century with a kick-off for the community project on Veterans Day at United Supermarkets. The memorial will keep the same style as the present Young County Veterans Memorial and will list the names of veterans who were inducted in or held a “Home of Record” in Young County on their certificate of release or discharge from active duty from Jan. 1, 2001 to present.

Early voting ends Friday, numbers higher than 2012

Early voting will end Friday, Nov. 4 at North Central Texas College and the Olney Community Library, and voter turnouts have been higher than at the same time in 2012. Voting times are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at NCTC and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Olney Community Library. Despite a rocky start to the election in Young County when voting machines lost power, Young County Elections Administrator Lauren Sullivan said that things have smoothed out since then.

Early start for new sheriff

Young County Judge John Bullock gives the oath of office to Travis Babcock who will serve as interim Young County Sheriff until Jan. 1. The previous sheriff, Bryan Walls, retired on Halloween (before his term expired in January), so the Young County Commissioners Court voted to have Babcock fill the rest of Walls’ term. Currently Babcock is unopposed for the office of sheriff, and so, has been declared elected.
