The Young Soil and Water Conservation District is now taking orders for windbreak seedling purchases. The container species available come in multiples of 25 in plastic containers (10 cubic inch root volume, 6-12 inch top) with several different species to choose from. Bareroot species come in multiples of 25 with several different species to choose from. Orders cannot be mixed or split up. Anyone interested in ordering the 12-18 inch seedlings should call 549-0422 ext. 3 or come by 1591 U.S. 380 bypass in Graham. The district clerk is on hand to take orders for trees from 9 a.m.

Young County Sheriff Bryan Walls will retire on Halloween, rather than at the end of his term on Jan. 1. The Young County Commissioners Court was given notice of the resignation, which is set to be effective Oct. 31. Due to their being no quorum present at the commissioners court meeting Tuesday, County Judge John Bullock said they could not discuss that item and could only state that the courthouse was aware of the resignation. Despite recent concerns regarding the integrity of voting machines in the United States, Young County Elections Administrator Lauren Sullivan said local voting equipment is safe and secure. In late August, suspected Russian hackers cracked into voter databases in Illinois and Arizona. No changes were made to the election systems in those states. The act was committed instead to cast doubt on the integrity and validity of the election process, Sullivan said.

The annual Chalupa Luncheon, hosted by the Graham Regional Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary on the downtown square, is 11 a.m. –1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. The $5 cost includes a chalupa meal, a drink, and the auxiliary’s famous chocolate dessert. Also for sale will be baked goods and gift shop items including seasonal decorative selections. A raffle drawing for nine big prizes is 1 p.m.; tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 and available from any auxiliary member or by calling 549-4728 or 550-4532.

The deadline at North Central Texas College to apply for scholarships for the Spring 2017 semester is Oct. 15. Scholarship amounts vary from $500 to $2,000 per academic year and all NCTC students are encouraged to apply. New and prospective students must apply for admission, activate their Lion Pride Email, and sign up for a scholarship account to complete the scholarship application. Graham’s annual Fall Clean-Up event kicks off next week on Saturday, Oct. 8, and continues through Sunday, Oct. 16. As opposed to the Spring cleanup, which took place on the Downtown Square, all cleanup activities will happen at the Graham Convenience Station, at 1421 Ave F. The station allows dumping of general refuse more than the 6-cubic-yard limit for free but that does not accept household garbage or food items. Though the Keep Graham Beautiful organization assisted with the Spring cleanup, their services will not be around for the Fall event, due to it being a slower cleanup event.
