The city of Graham saw a drop in the amount of sales taxes returned to the city for September, continuing a trend for the year so far. Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $629.2 million in local sales tax allocations for September, 1.4 percent less than in September 2015.

GHS Senior Smith Graham was named as one of about 16,000 Semifinalists in the current National Merit Scholarship program after receiving a qualifying score on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Graham must fulfill requirements to advance to the finalist level , where he would then go on to compete for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, worth about $33 million. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.

The Graham Area United Way held their campaign kickoff luncheon last Tuesday, announcing their goal for the year of $118,000. The organization overall has raised a total of $48,525.79 which encompasses 41 percent of the goal. Graham Area United Way Executive Director Susie Cerecedez said the organization has been around 60 years, helping nonprofits in Graham.

The Graham ISD board of trustees approved and submitted a request to the City of Graham to prohibit alcohol sales within 1,000 feet of any GISD campus Wednesday. The submission will only take effect if the November 2016 ballot measure to allow the legal sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption is passed and the Graham City Council approves the GISD request.
