Graham High School senior named National Merit Semifinalist

GHS Senior Smith Graham was named as one of about 16,000 Semifinalists in the current National Merit Scholarship program after receiving a qualifying score on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Graham must fulfill requirements to advance to the finalist level , where he would then go on to compete for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, worth about $33 million. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.

Youth celebrate the Constitution

Graham High School Student Council presented the 79th Annual Flag Raising ceremony by the Graham chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in honor of Constitution Week on Wednesday morning. Constitution Week is celebrated annually from Sept. 17-23. DAR started Constitution Week and it was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on Aug 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

City, GISD halt plans to extend alcohol sales ban zone

Discussion of an ordinance to prohibit alcohol sales within 1,000 feet of the borders of any Graham ISD campus came to a halt Thursday after the city found it didn’t have the authority to do so. City Manager Brandon Anderson approached GISD to get an ordinance passed prior to the November off-premise sales election that will determine if stores can sell beer and wine in the city. Off-premise sales happen mostly at grocery and convenience stores, where the alcohol purchased cannot be consumed.

New program partners Robotics Academy, Air Force Association

A new CyberPatriot program to encourage students to pursue Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers was recently implemented by the director of the Robotics Academy in Graham, Mitzi Morrison. The CyberPatriot program is the Air Force Association's National Youth Cyber Education Program, which was created to motivate students towards careers in cybersecurity and STEM disciplines.

City, GISD working on beer, wine sales ban near schools

The Graham ISD board of trustees approved and submitted a request to the City of Graham to prohibit alcohol sales within 1,000 feet of any GISD campus Wednesday. The submission will only take effect if the November 2016 ballot measure to allow the legal sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption is passed and the Graham City Council approves the GISD request.
