The Graham Independent School District’s total tax rate – the sum of the maintenance and operations rate (M&O) plus the interest and sinking rate (I&S) – is unchanged from last year’s rate. Last year’s total tax rate of $1.347 per $100 valuation will remain the same in the coming budget year for GISD. This was decided at the Aug. 10 school board meeting. GISD’s fiscal year starts Sept. 1. A public meeting to discuss the 2017 budget and tax rate was set for 8:15 a.m. Monday, Aug.

The Graham City Council appointed Kyle Peavy to fill the Place 3 council position, which had been held by Spencer Street III, who died July 29 at age 49. According to Place 1 Councilman Darby Brockway, Peavy will serve out Street’s remaining term, which ends in May 2017. Peavy is executive vice president at Ciera Bank in Graham.

After a two-year lapse, the topic of alcohol has made its way onto the ballot again after a resolution was passed by Graham City Council Thursday placing the sale of beer and wine on the Nov. 8 ballot. Beer, wine and liquor sales have been an object of much debate in the past, in Graham and throughout county Precinct 1.

There will be parent information meetings in the GHS Theater from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 and Thursday, Aug. 18, for parents for GHS freshmen and new students. Young County set the dates for two public hearings on its proposed tax rate increase for the new budget year. The public hearing dates – Aug. 22 and Aug. 18, both at 9:30 a.m. – were set at the Commissioners Court meeting Monday, Aug 8.
