City renews contract with Humane Society of Young County

After making headway in negotiations for animal care services during a special-called meeting, the Graham City Council voted to renew their contract with the Humane Society of Young County.

HSYC is a nonprofit organization that receives funding from the city of Graham, city of Newcastle, city of Olney and Young County under different contracts for the animal care services.

City adding flashing stop signs at Fourth, Tennessee intersection

After approving a four-way stop for the intersection of Fourth Street and Tennessee Street, the city will be moving flashing stop signs from another area of the city as an additional safety measure.

The Graham City Council met Thursday, Oct. 9 and considered the reconfiguration of the intersection to include flashing stop signs based on a recommendation from council member Jack Little.

Making a local impact: Family Fun and Fishing event Oct. 25

For over a decade, the Remembering Wyatt Dale Water Safety Awareness organization has worked to promote water safety and will continue those efforts with their Family Fun and Fishing event.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at Firemen’s Park in Graham. The fishing tournament will be held from 10 a.m. to noon along the duck pond at the park.

Comanche County man arrested on charge of indecency with a child

A Comanche County man was arrested this week by Brownwood Police Department on a Young County warrant for a charge of indecency with a child.

Derek Licea, 33, was booked Monday, Oct. 6 into the Brown County Jail where he remains as of Wednesday, Oct. 8 on a bond of $100,000 for the charge along with a parole violation.

Licea allegedly exposed himself to a child younger than 17 years of age on or about Wednesday, Aug. 27, according to the probable cause affidavit.

City, HSYC make progress in contract negotiations

The city of Graham and Humane Society of Young County made headway in negotiations for animal care services, with a final contract being drafted for consideration at a future meeting.

Early voting begins in less than two weeks for the November constitutional amendment election.

The only items on the upcoming election will be 17 constitutional amendment propositions, with no local and state offices on the Young County ballot.

Early voting in the election will run from Monday, Oct. 20 through Friday, Oct. 31. Voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 20-24 and Oct. 27-29. The final early voting period will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 30-31.

Nonprofits uniting to spread domestic violence awareness

October is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Graham Crisis Center is looking to educate the community on this topic during their National Day of Unity for domestic violence awareness. 

While the National Day of Unity is recognized during the first Monday in October, the crisis center will be holding a domestic violence awareness event from 1-2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the Young County Courthouse.

Young County Community Resource Fair this weekend

Nonprofits and area resources are coming together this weekend to inform the community of the local services available.

The Young County Community Resource Fair is being hosted from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 on the Young County Courthouse lawn. 

The event will include nonprofits and community resources along with several activities such as bouncehouses, door prizes and face painting.

(THOMAS WALLNER | THE GRAHAM LEADER) he Library of Graham is hosting the inaugural Booktacular event Saturday, Oct. 18 for those 21 years of age and older. The event will have library tours, a cash bard, a costume contest, trivia and more.

Library of Graham expanding reach through events, programs

The Library of Graham and its board set goals for 2025-2026 focusing on areas of the facility and have met and are continuing to meet those goals through services and events like the upcoming Booktacular. 

The first priority set by the board was for community outreach and one of their initiatives is the Booktacular Halloween event from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. The event has free admission, but requires an RSVP with the library due to limited space.

Free College Application Week upcoming across the state

The second week of October will be Free College Application Week throughout the state where admission application fees will be waived for Texas residents.

This year, the free application week will be held from Oct. 13-19. The week was created by Senate Bill 2231 during the 89th Texas Legislative Session for all public colleges and universities for all residents who apply through ApplyTexas to undergraduate programs.
