County approves ARPA purchases

Young County Commissioners voted Monday, Feb. 13 to use American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to address needs in the county and inside the Young County Courthouse. Young County will soon have the use of its own bulldozer to combat wildfires and for county work and the courthouse will be receiving much-needed electrical upgrades.

Commissioners approved Monday, Feb. 13, the purchase of a $217,220 bulldozer using ARPA funds. Also approved was a $43,635 bid from Willen Electric for a new panelboard and other work inside the courthouse.

GISD working to secure district with electronic door locking system

In August 2022, the GISD Board of Trustees approved an electronic exterior door lock system and the board in its March meeting will consider approving a vendor for an electronic interior lock system.

In October 2022, Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Speaker Dade Phelan, House Appropriations and Senate Finance Committee Chairs announced $400 million in funding to the Texas Education Agency to assist school districts in replacing or upgrading doors, windows, fencing, communications and various other safety measures.

GISD calls $49.4 million bond election for May

The Graham ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Wednesday to call a $49.4 million bond election to cover the estimated scope of work for facility improvements. The bond issue will be placed onto the May 6 ballot for those within the GISD boundaries.

After conversations with the district’s architect, Harper Perkins Architects, and its construction manager, Teinart Construction, an estimate of $49,411,675 was presented and accepted by the board Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Local business to donate landscaping for courthouse lawn

The Young County Courthouse lawn is getting spruced up through a donation from a local landscaping company. County commissioners approved a donation Monday from Andrew Bryant of Goin’ Green Lawn & Landscape for landscape work on the courthouse lawn and surrounding the gazebo.

Bryant, who is also working with the Library of Graham on its garden, spoke to commissioners and outlined his plans for the $57,300 project, including photos of 3D renderings of what the courthouse could look like when the first part of the project is completed in May.

Walker retirement reception rescheduled

Jon B. Walker, Chief Pilot for Zack Burkett Co., retired recently after serving in that capacity for more than 30 years.

His retirement reception has been rescheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24 at the offices of Zack Burkett Co. in Burkett Industrial Park. Friends, family and well-wishers are welcome to come by and visit.

Walker is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served as pilot of the Lockheed P-3 Orion, a 4-engine turboprop aircraft used extensively for anti-submarine and maritime surveillance duties.
