90th Judicial District Court Pleas for November

A total of six cases were pleaded in the 90th Judicial District Court for November. Plea information is provided by the office of the 90th Judicial District Attorney. 

Juan Diaz Jr., 59, of Graham, pleaded guilty to the offense evading arrest or detention with vehicle, and was sentenced to 27 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Institutional Division (TDCJ-ID), and was ordered to pay a $6,000 fine and court costs. 

State Capital Highlights: Abbott unveils new border strategy


Gov. Greg Abbott said last Thursday the state is initiating a billboard campaign across Central America and border cities in northern Mexico to discourage migrants from attempting to enter Texas, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

The billboards are in multiple languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and Russian. They tell stories of migrants being sexually assaulted while trying to enter the United States.

City to apply for TxDOT grants in early 2025

Following over a year of planning, the city of Graham is gearing up to apply for grants in 2025 for a proposed sidewalk project and a Salt Creek hike and bike trail. 

The Transportation Improvements Committee met Thursday, Dec. 12 and spoke about applying for the Texas Department of Transportation grants through the Transportation Alternative Set-Aside (TA) Program.

Parks board to adjust project priority list

In July, the Parks Department Board of Directors approved a prioritized list of projects as part of a parks master plan and are now looking to amend that list.

The board met Tuesday, Dec. 10 to consider amending their parks master plan prioritized list. Board president Alex Heartfield said keeping the small park concept of Lincoln Park as the number one priority was important.

Firemen’s Park disc golf course expansion nearing completion

The approaching completion of expansion work on the disc golf course at Firemen’s Park marks another milestone from the Graham Parks Department Board of Directors. 

The disc golf project was part of the first phase of park improvements at Firemen's Park, which included new playground equipment, restroom renovations and the addition of two dog parks. 

Graham Disc Golf Club representative Ian Woosley said the expansion from nine to 18 holes was something required for tournaments.

Elrod takes over management of Young County Arena

Julie Elrod looks to follow the footsteps of five-year Young County Arena Manager Toni Elliott as she takes the reins over the facility, bringing her experience to the position.

Elrod started in the position Wednesday, Dec. 11 and was welcomed by the Young County Arena Board of Directors on her first day of the job. She was one of 14 applicants who applied for the position and was reviewed by the board which served as the hiring selection committee.

The building is currently undergoing renovations as the city of Olney looks to make it a central hub for services in the city. Located within are the tax assessor-collector, justice of the peace and adult and juvenile probation.

Olney annex work moving forward

Work is underway to improve and restore portions of the Olney annex building as the Olney Economic Development Corporation works to establish the location as a hub for county services.

Olney EDC Director Tom Parker provided the Young County Commissioners Court with an update on the progress of the work Monday, Dec. 9. He said the restorative work around the entrance has been completed.
