State Capital Highlights: Insurance hikes make affordable housing tougher


A growing number of Texas homeowners are forgoing buying homeowners insurance as premiums skyrocket, according to a recent report from the Texas comptroller.

Recent natural disasters – hurricanes, severe storms and wildfires – have prompted some insurers to limit or even eliminate coverage in Texas. Daniel Oney, research director of the Texas Real Estate Research Center at Texas A&M University, says premium increases in Texas have outpaced the rest of the country.

Election day Tuesday

Voters across the state and in Young County have one final opportunity Tuesday to cast their ballots in the general election.

Election day voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 at five voting locations in Young County.

Those locations are North Central Texas College at 928 Cherry St. in Graham, Loving VFD at 8891 Hwy. 114 E. in Loving, First Baptist Church Newcastle at 501 Graham St. in Newcastle, First United Methodist Church at 700 Third St. in Graham and the Olney Community Library and Arts Center at 807 W. Hamilton St. in Olney.

The vision of three individuals in Graham has spawned national interest as the MOSH-1 off-grid solar container system looks to provide versatile solutions for the future of power.

The company’s mission is to provide sustainable clean energy meeting electrical needs in remote areas where no electrical infrastructure exists, or in a disaster situation. MOSH-1 utilizes a minimum of 22,000 watts of off-grid solar power that is stored in internal batteries.

Winslow violates community supervision conditions

An Olney man who accepted a plea deal in 2021 for indecency with a child by sexual contact was found guilty this week of violating conditions of his community supervision.

Michael Winslow, 80, of Olney, was found guilty of violating multiple conditions of community supervision during a motion to adjudicate hearing Tuesday, Oct. 29. The conditions were placed on him in October 2021 following his plea of 10 years deferred adjudication community supervision.

Smith accepts plea for criminally negligent homicide

Following an Olney Police Department and Texas Rangers investigation, Jasmine Alexis Kay Smith took a plea deal this week for three years deferred adjudication community supervision for criminally negligent homicide of an 8-month-old infant.

Smith, 28, of Jack County, accepted a plea agreement Tuesday, Oct. 29 of three years deferred adjudication community supervision and a fine of $750.

Young County sees 36% turnout for first week of early voting

A surge of voters came out for the first week of early voting in the November general election, with 1,131 ballots cast on the first day.

At the conclusion of the first week of early voting Sunday, Oct. 27, a total of 4,499 voters turned out to cast their ballots, or 36.25% of all 12,411 registered voters in Young County. 

This total is up from the first seven days of early voting in the 2020 November presidential election which had a total of 3,806 voters turn out to cast their ballots, or 32.2% of all 11,820 registered voters in the county.

A lasting legacy: Bethel Baptist Church to celebrate 75 years

It was in 1949 that 19 community members came together with a common purpose: organizing a Baptist church in the north portion of Graham. Seventy-five years later, Bethel Baptist Church still stands strong welcoming and praying with the community.

November will mark the 75th anniversary of the organization of Bethel Baptist Church. The church will be hosting a celebration Sunday, Nov. 3 beginning with Sunday school at 9:45 a.m.

90th Judicial District Court Pleas for September

A total of 23 cases were pleaded in the 90th Judicial District Court for September. Plea information is provided by the office of the 90th Judicial District Attorney. 

• Johanna Sharon Delira, 21, of Olney, pleaded guilty to the offense of intoxication manslaughter with vehicle, and was sentenced to eight years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Institutional Division (TDCJ-ID), and was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine, court costs and restitution.
