Gov. Abbott honors GPD officer with Star of Texas Award

The Star of Texas Awards honor peace officers, firefighters and emergency medical first responders who made commitments while performing their duties. Last week, Graham Police Department K-9 Officer David Lipsey joined the ranks of those commemorated since 2003.

Gov. Greg Abbott recognized 21 state residents for their courage and sacrifice in the line of duty during a ceremony held Wednesday, Sept. 11 in Austin.

GRMC budget, tax rate hearings next week

Graham Regional Medical Center is hosting a public hearing next week regarding its proposed budget and tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year. The proposed tax rate will remain the same as the year before, but property values are set to increase.

A public hearing will be held at noon Wednesday, Sept. 25 at the GRMC Education Conference Room at 1301 Montgomery Road in Graham. Following the public hearing regarding the tax rate and budget, the GRMC board will consider adoption of both.

New GISD library, book management system set for launch in fall 2025

A centralized book content and review system will be implemented during the current school year for Graham ISD through the online Bookmarked program.

Director of Curriculum and Instruction Gary Browning and Secondary Curriculum Coordinator Anne Routon gave a presentation about the program to the GISD Board of Trustees during their meeting Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Young County, Graham see increase in sales tax allocations

Young County, Graham and Newcastle will see increases in sales tax allocations from sales made in July by businesses that report sales tax monthly.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced Wednesday, Sept. 11 that the state will be sending cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $1.1 billion in local sales tax allocations this month, 6.3% more than in September 2023.

Step right up: Circus returns to Graham

In a little less than two weeks, the opportunity to step into a world of fun comes to Graham when the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus arrives in town.

This one-night, two-performance event is sponsored by the Graham Evening Lions Club and is one of the largest fundraisers for the club throughout the year. It helps support various causes the Evening Lions Club donates to, as well as scholarships the club gives out each year. 

The circus was initially brought in as a companion to the carnival put on by the Noon Lions Club each year.

GISD continues district cellphone use discussion

Campus administrators and members of the Graham ISD Board of Trustees continued a discussion of cellphone use on campuses and presented research on local procedures and methods.

The school board discussed in August cellphone use in the district and requested more information before the next meeting. During the meeting Wednesday, Sept. 11, no action was taken.

Krick takes plea for Olney aggravated assault

One of two suspects arrested in June and extradited back to the state following an aggravated assault which occurred in Olney in May, took a plea deal this week for seven years in prison.

Summer Krick, 22, of Olney, accepted a plea agreement Wednesday, Sept. 11 and was sentenced to seven years confinement on the charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Krick received a total of 118 days credit for time served in jail.

HTeaO in talks to bring store to Graham

With over 70 locations across the state, HTeaO has turned its eyes to Graham for one of its future stores offering traditional hot teas and iced teas.

Following a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission in August, the Graham City Council approved a request Thursday, Aug. 29 from Graham Industrial Association (GIA) to replat a property located at 1516 Hwy. 16 S.

Olney PD K-9 Bond supported by Project K-9 Hero

With the passing of Olney Police Department Cpl. Miranda Wright in August, her K-9 partner Bond retired from a career of service and will now receive care and support through the Project K-9 Hero organization.

Bond was adopted by Wright’s best friend and fellow K-9 handler for Graham Police Department, Sergeant Hailey Calcote. She provides Bond with specialized care which includes prescription food for allergies and medication for his anxiety.
