GCA hosting Josh Weathers Sunday at Memorial Auditorium

Graham Concert Association will be hosting a performance by Josh Weathers Sunday at Graham Memorial Auditorium. The concert is a make-up performance for their October 2021 scheduled event being canceled.

Weathers is a singer and songwriter who combines songs with a rocking live performance. The performance will be 5 p.m. at Graham Memorial Auditorium, 628 Third St. in Graham. Doors for the concert will open at 4:30 p.m. Seating for the concert is by general admission which is first come, first serve.

Graham PD apprehends suspect in Monday shooting

Graham Police Department apprehended a suspect in a reporting shooting at an apartment complex on Fourth Street Monday morning. The suspect, Kamron Austin Nail, 17, of Graham, surrendered and was taken into custody.

At approximately 9:38 a.m. Monday, Feb. 21, GPD officers investigated a report of a shooting, according to a release from GPD. Officer Daniel Huerta conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 700 block of Carolina Street in Graham. Prior to the stop, Huerta observed the vehicle leaving an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Fourth Street.

Early voting in March primaries starts with low turnout

Early voting in the March primaries started slow in Young County with the Texas Secretary of State reporting 324 voters, or a 3.6% turnout from the 11,614 registered voters as of the end of Wednesday. Early voting throughout the state began Monday, Feb. 14 and will run for two weeks through Friday, Feb. 25.

On the March ballot is contested party runnings for both state and local seats in Young County. The last day to register to vote in the March election was Monday, Jan. 31. The last day to apply for a ballot by mail received, not postmarked, was Friday, Feb. 18.

Changing of the Guard: Partridge steps into role as Graham Chamber of Commerce, CVB CEO

After joining the Graham Crisis Center in February 2020, and serving as the organization’s executive director since September 2020, Cathy Partridge moved to a new position Tuesday as CEO of the Graham Chamber of Commerce and Graham Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Partridge follows former CEO Krisa De La Cruz, who submitted her resignation in January after serving six years in the position. Partridge said she will still have a presence at the Graham Crisis Center until they can hire someone to oversee her position.

Filing deadline tomorrow in May elections

Candidates have one day remaining to file for place on the May general election ballot for local political subdivisions. The city of Graham, Graham ISD, Graham Regional Medical Center, city of Olney, Olney ISD, Olney Hamilton Hospital, city of Newcastle and Newcastle ISD will have seats up for election.

The first day to file for a place on the general election ballot was Wednesday, Jan. 19, and the last day to file will be 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, or dependent on when the business closes. The last day to file a declaration as a write-in candidate will be Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Special election for legal sale of alcoholic, mixed beverages added to May ballot

The Graham City Council Tuesday called a special election on the May ballot for the legal sale of alcoholic beverages including mixed beverages within the city of Graham. The election issue comes following a petition filed by the Graham Wet Committee which reached the required number of signatures to be placed on the ballot.

The committee filed a petition for a local option election with the city of Graham in December 2021, looking to add a measure for the legal sale of all alcoholic beverages, including mixed beverages within the city limits to an upcoming election.

County postpones tax abatement hearing regarding Plug Power

A public hearing to consider a tax abatement for a proposed hydrogen fuel cell production facility has been postponed. The meeting was originally scheduled for Feb. 14 at the Young County Courthouse. The postponement was announced by Young County Judge John Bullock.

Bullock cited scheduling issues with representatives of Plug Holding Company, LLC and Allison, Bass & Magee, LLP, who are representing Young County, in an email to The Graham Leader.
