Young County Commissioners discuss wind farm agreement

The Young County Commissioners Court Monday voted unanimously on a tax abatement agreement with Young Wind LLC. The agreement was discussed during Monday’s regular scheduled meeting at the Young County Courthouse.

The agreement, which lasts 10 years, was negotiated by Bob Bass of Allison, Bass & Magee, LLP representing Young County and Young Wind LLC, the company created by Apex Clean Energy to manage the wind farm project that is proposed to a 20,000-acre area west of Graham and southwest of Newcastle.

Meals On Wheels struggling to sustain funding

For over 40 years, the Meals On Wheels program in Graham has served the elderly and disabled Graham population. The organization is continuing to struggle meeting the local needs of the community with donations drying up to help offset the cost of food.

Each week, the local organization serves meals to 100 clients five days a week who are unable to shop for or prepare meals for themselves due to age-related illnesses and disabilities. The program is not affiliated with the national Meals on Wheels organization and depends on local volunteers and donors to stay afloat.

Young County approves improvement zone, tax abatement for proposed wind farm

Apex Clean Energy Inc. cleared a hurdle in its attempt to build a wind farm in Young County Monday at a regular scheduled Young County Commissioners Court meeting at the Young County Courthouse. In two votes, the commissioners unanimously voted to approve a request from Apex for a reinvestment zone and the acceptance of an application for a tax abatement agreement with the county.

Election Day Saturday in local general elections

The last opportunity for local voters to cast a vote in four local elections in Young County will be Saturday during election day in the general elections. Elections are being held for the city of Graham, city of Olney, Olney ISD and city of Newcastle, which had candidates other than the incumbents file to run.

Early voting continued to see low turnout for the local general elections in Young County, with 274 voters turning out as of Monday afternoon, or a 3% turnout from county registered voters.

Graham’s Jerry Don Logan inducted into Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame

Jerry Don Logan started his path to pro football in Graham. Through guidance from his parents, he learned the importance of hard work and dedication. That ethos guided Logan to a successful college career and a 10-year career in the NFL with the Baltimore Colts. Monday night he was inducted into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame.

Logan became the sixth Super Bowl champion to join the hall, located in Abilene. He joined Don Maynard, Bob Lilly, Terry Orr, Justin Snow and Dominic Rhodes.

Graham Farmers Market to set up shop next Saturday

Graham Farmers Market will open their season next Saturday at the Old Ag Barn in Graham. Since 2018, the farmers market has provided local-made goods such as produce, meats, hand-crafted items and desserts to the community.

The season will kick off May 1 and will run Saturdays from 8:30-11:30 a.m. through September at the Old Ag Barn on 150 Hwy. 67 in Graham. The organization is operated by a board made up of vendors and community members which serve to promote the businesses under the market.

Lions Club Carnival returns to Graham early May

After being one of many events forced to cancel last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Lions Club Carnival will be returning to the Graham downtown square starting Wednesday, May 5.

The carnival will be held Wednesday, May 5 through Saturday, May 8, on the Graham downtown square starting at 5:30 p.m. each night. The location of the carnival in front of the American Legion building had to be changed this year in order to accommodate the location now being Graham City Hall.

Tax abatement zone public hearing for Young County Monday

Young County Commissioners will be hosting a public hearing Monday regarding the company Apex Clean Energy, Inc., and their application to designate the area in Young County for their proposed wind farm as a tax abatement zone.

The zone submitted for application by the company covers 20,023.50 acres of land in Young County and will incorporate 11 different property owners. The area to be designated as the Young County Reinvestment Zone is located west of the city of Newcastle and contains portions of the boundaries of Graham ISD and Newcastle ISD.
