Betty Lou (Carey) Smith passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 11, 2022, at Presbyterian Manor, surrounded by loved ones. She was 91. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 18, 2022, at 11 a.m., in the Sanctuary of Floral Heights Methodist Church, under the direction of Rev. Dr. Isaac Butterworth. Burial will follow in the family plot at Crestview Memorial Park.

Betty was born in Wichita Falls on Dec. 24, 1930. As a young child, she lived in a number of oil towns in west Texas with her parents, Russell Carey Sr. and wife, Mary Carey. Her father was a drilling contractor, and the family moved with the drilling rig where drilling was taking place. The family later settled in Graham, Texas, where Betty finished grade school and graduated from Graham High School. She continued her education at Ward Belmont Girls School in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from Southern Methodist University.

Betty married Edwin L. Smith in 1951, and they enjoyed almost 68 years of happiness until Ed’s death in 2019. They made close friends in Wichita Falls and stayed in touch with their friends from Graham. They enjoyed traveling together, visiting the capitols and countryside in Western Europe and Canada as well as such diverse sites in the United States as Hawaii, New England, Yellowstone and Colorado.

Betty relished her role as a homemaker and “stay at home” mother for her children, Lisa and Scott. She made sure that wherever the family lived was a home, not just a house.

Betty served her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, throughout her married life. She belonged to Floral Heights Methodist Church for over 60 years. She taught children’s Sunday School classes and volunteered in the Church office. She was also active in the Wichita Falls community. She served on the Wichita Falls Museum Board, the Wichita Falls Symphony League Board and the Wichita Falls Ballet Theater Board. She was a member of Cotillion and Carousel dance clubs, Geologists’ Wives Club and Unity Club.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her grandson, Blair Lang. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Lee Williamson (Jim), and her son, Edwin Scott Smith, as well as five grandchildren, Katie Lang (Blair’s widow), of Dallas, Lindsey Lang Box of Dallas, Laura Lunn (Zac) of Fort Worth, Natalie Smith of Waco and E. Scott Smith, Jr. (Cady) of Waco. She is also survived by her brother Russell Carey, Jr. of Graham; and five great-grandchildren, Bea Lang, Stella Lang, Lilly Lunn, Frances Lunn and Cassidy Smith.

The family wishes to thank Christie Payne and her staff at Presbyterian Manor for their compassionate and skillful care.

The family desires that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Hospice of Wichita Falls in Betty’s memory.

Betty will be missed by all who knew her. She was very intelligent and had a wonderful sense of humor.

She was determined to get well and return to an active life, even in her final days.
